William AbbotPublished Wednesday, June 16, 2004 in the Gurdon TimesWilliam Robert Abbott passed away on May 22, 2004, of lung cancer. He was born July 12, 1933, in Gurdon to Roy Abbott and Mary Helen Regan. He graduated Gurdon High School in 1951 and Henderson State Teachers College in Arkadelphia in 1955. Upon graduation he served two years in the U.S. Army in Germany. After completing his tour, he joined Reynolds Metals Company in Corpus Christi, Texas. He retired after having worked as an accountant with the company for 38 years. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife of 49 = years, Jean Bryant Abbott of Pine Bluff; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Richard Berry of Canadian, Texas; one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Angela Abbott of Katy, Texas; one brother, James Abbott of Baton Rogue, La.; and five grandchildren, Christin and Danny Abbott, and Katie, Joshua and Caleb Berry. Bill was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church of Portland. He served faithfully in the Methodist choir for 47 years. Music and tennis were his passions. Visitation was held May 24 in Portland. Funeral services were at the First United Methodist Church in Portland at 2 p.m. May 25 with interment at San Patricio Memorial Gardens.
