Few bother voting in primary election

Apathy ruled the May 18 primary election as a scant 17 percent of registered voters from Nevada County bothered to go to the polls.

Most of the races featured unopposed candidates, though there were a few contested positions, especially on the state level.

Starting with the presidential race for Democrats, John Kerry easily carried the county with 666 votes. Lyndon Larouche was next with 106, while Dennie Kucinich trailed with 90.

For U.S. Senator, Sen. Blanche Lincoln easily whipped her opponent Lisa Burks, 799-149.

In the race for Nevada County Coroner, Gary Hicks edged Ricky Burke 504-446.

Steve Jackson retained his post as Constable of the Missouri Township by beating Mike Mullins, 282-129.

Susie Key will replace Gary Lewis as Justice of the Peace, as she beat Jennie Woods, 88-77.

James Osborn beat Tom Hand for Constable of the Emmet Township. the final tally was 49-18.

Judge Wendell Griffin posted a win in the county, beating Jim Hannah 463-444.

Judge Jim Gunter easily carried the county as he garnered 860 ballots. Paul Danielson received 41 votes, while Collins Kilgore managed 74.

On the GOP side, the Bush-Cheney ticket pulled in a total of 16 votes for president. There was no opposition.

State Sen. Jim Holt easily retained his seat by beating Rosemarie Clampitt and Andy Lee. Holt managed 36 votes, to five by Clampitt and three for Lee.
