Prescott's School Board needed less than an hour to conclude its business Tuesday, May 25.

In fact, the meeting lasted 55 minutes from start to finish, including the executive session.

The board approved out-of-state travel for James Cannon to attend the Region II National FFA meeting in Glenwood Springs, Colo. Cannon is on the Region II board.

Jason Himes will be taking a trip to Los Angeles where he will be trained how to work the Oracle programming. Oracle is a business-oriented computer program set up to teach students how to use such programs as Java. Students successfully completing the course can be employed immediately afterwards, or can continue their education for even better paying jobs in the computer industry.

Superintendent Hyacinth Deon was approved to attend the National Coalition for Equitable Education in New Mexico.

All of these trips will be paid through grants, and not cost the district anything, Deon said.

The board also approved allowing Prescott Manor to use district buses in the event of an emergency which would require the residents of the nursing home to be evacuated.

Area children can participate in the Seamless Summer Feeding Program. It is for children aged 2-18, and there is no income guideline. Meals will be served starting June 1, with the program concluding on July 30.

Those wanting to participate will be fed from 11 a.m. until noon at the Prescott Elementary School cafeteria.

The district is also looking into new rules and regulations for a secondary alternative education program. Deon said the handbook committee will meet and make recommendations on how to assign problem students to ALE for discipline problems.

This will be a punitive program, Deon said, for those students who continuously disrupt class and need an alternative learning environment. The district is looking to send students being so punished to Garland School in Hope.

Pearl Bailey presented the Prescott District Education Association (PDEA) report.

She introduced Megan Vandiver as the winner of the Dorothy Odom Scholarship.

The PDEA met at Murphy's and elected officers. The new president will be Agnes Morrow. Karen McKinnon was tabbed as vice president, with Patricia Roberts named secretary. Mildred Scott will be the reporter.

Employee matters were also handled at the meeting. The board approved hiring Kathy Jones as assistant elementary school principal and federal program coordinator. Carol Mullins was hired as a bus driver for next year.

David Henderson resigned his position as technology coordinator. Other resignations include: Mary Ward, seventh grade English; Doyle Malcolm, senior high English; and Penny Inlow, paraprofessional.
