Plans for upcoming events topped the agenda for the Gurdon Chamber of Commerce meeting held May 11.

President Mary Smith told chamber members she had been called on to give a date for the Christmas Parade. Based on past practices, the parade is set for Dec. 2, Smith said.

Chamber members were also shown a sketch of the Christmas ornaments that will be offered for sale. The traditional globe ornaments will have a sketch of the old Gurdon High School. Plans were also briefly discussed for the Gurdon Forest Festival, set for October.

The topic then turned to the possibility of putting signs up to welcome visitors to town. The idea is to depict several historical events, organizations and people important to the town, including the railroad, Gurdon Light, Hoo-Hoo and Meriwether Lewis. The best material was also discussed with the general consensus being that the sign should be made of aluminum. Smith said she has not gotten an estimate on the cost of the signs and asked if the Chamber wanted to pursue the idea. After more discussion, it was suggested that the idea be put on hold for the moment.

In other business, Smith said she had sent a letter to Dan Gatheright, director of Baptist Medical Center - Arkadelphia, expressing an interest in the medical center, which has recently closed. She said the letter simply said Smith and the chamber members were available if there was anything they could do to help the center reopen.

Smith and several others said they had not received a reply.
