Children's Week starts April 19BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, April 14, 2004 in the Nevada County Picayune Plans for the annual Children's Week program are finished, with the event to be held April 19-23. It will kick off Monday with a parade in the old Prescott High School gymnasium, which will be the focal point of all activities for the week. The children will be served a snack of juice, cracker and cheese after the parade. Prissy Traczewitz said the body walk will arrive Thursday, but volunteers will be needed to set it up and work it, getting it ready for use Friday. Candace Carrie' has the training manual and will be working with teachers at Prescott Elementary School, getting them ready for the activity. The body walk can handle between 300-420 children, with each child participating be given activity books with lessons about the human body. Carrie' said the body walk will take about an hour and 20 minutes to complete. Nevada is scheduled to kick this event off at 9 a.m., with Emmet on tap at 12:30 p.m. Prescott's third and fourth graders will be worked in accordingly. The walk will have organ-wise guys at different stations to talk about what each organ in the body does. These organ-wise guys were created in Georgia and developed through the Kellogg Foundation to be used in teaching. Overall, the body walk is a 30 foot by 30 foot station. Students will start at the mouth and travel through the body. Janet McAdams said about 30 people will be working the 14 different stations of the body walk. It will be for students in the third and fourth grades. Phillip McAdams said the fire house will be ready for Children's Week. This activity teaches children how to escape safely from a burning building. It is a "shrunken" two-story house which has non-toxic smoke pumped in to simulate a fire. Children are shown how to climb out the windows and exit by the doors in a safe manner. The fire house, he said, will be available April 20-21 and be placed by the old gymnasium at Prescott High School. Training sessions in how the house operates were held for members of the Nevada County Rescue Unit, who will be manning the house for the demonstrations. On April 22 there will be a children's story time at the Prescott-Nevada County Library. This is in connection with National Library Week. Children will be given books and encouraged to read and there will be a community coffee from 9:30-11 a.m. as well. The Science Camp will be Wednesday, with children learning about the importance of hand washing, a water activity and recycling. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is scheduled to bring its aquarium down, and this is always a favorite for children as they get to see the different varieties of fish in Arkansas waters. In addition, representatives from Logoly State Park will bring reptiles for the children to see. The Arkansas Department of Health will do to different pre-school in the county to talk to the children about nutrition. The children will be introduced to "Little Organ Annie" during these talks.
