Races set for primary electionBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, April 7, 2004 in the Nevada County Picayune While every county office is open for election, there are relatively few opposed races. In fact, there are but four contested races in Nevada County. One of those is for Justice of the Peace, District 1, being vacated by Gary Lewis, who is moving out of the district. Susy Key and Jennie Woods are both looking to replace Lewis. The other race is for constable in the Missouri Township. Steven Jackson and Mike Mullins are the candidates for this office. The third contested race is for the Emmet constable position, which has Tom Hand opposing incumbent James Osborn. Ricky Burke and Gary Hicks are both vying for the position of Nevada County Coroner in the last contested race. Otherwise, the incumbents are unopposed in the city and county. Carolyn Steed will remain Nevada County Circuit Clerk, while Steve Otwell will continue as Nevada County Sheriff. Bob Cummings will continue representing District 5 as JP, while Karen Cobb stays on as Nevada County Treasurer. Danny Martin has no opposition for the constabulary of Caney, nor does Myrna Waters for the position of JP for district 7. Ann Stockton will retain her seat on the Prescott City Council from Ward 3, Position 2, while William "Willie" McCord, Jr., will be the Alabama township constable. Billy House will remain the alderman for Ward 1, Position 1, and Howard Austin will stay on as alderman for Ward 2, Position 1. James Roy Brown will continue as the Nevada County Judge, with Larry Baker being the alderman from Ward 1, Position 2. Arval Ray Mason has no competition for JP district 8, nor does Curtis Lee Johnson for JP district 4. James Roy Cornelius continues as alderman from Ward 4, Position 2, while Susy Meeks remains as alderman for Ward 4, Position 1. George Clary is unopposed for JP district 9, as is Billy Waters for the Taylor township constable job. Danny Beavert will remain alderman for Ward 2, Position 2, and Donny McGuire stays on as JP for district 3. Jerry L. Wilson is seeking the spot on the city council for Ward 3, Position 1, and Pam Box will remain Nevada County Assessor. Julie Stockton will stay on as Nevada County Clerk, while Willie Wilson remains as JP for district 2, and Leo Holleman will be the JP for district 6. Gene Hale is unopposed for District Judge.
