PRESCOTT 19
Published Wednesday, March 31, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneBLEVINS 9 The Wolves gained a measure of revenge over the Blevins Hornets after losing to them twice earlier this year by a combined score of 19-4. In Wednesday's game, the Wolves put everything together for the win, and the contest was called after six innings because of the 10-run rule. Neither team scored in the first frame, but the Wolves exploded for five in the top of the second. Angelo Haynes walked to start the inning, moved to second on a single by Nolen and went to third when Ralph Marlow was hit by a pitch. Brad Harris cleared the bases with a triple, and went home when Bullock went yard. The Hornets responded with a single run in the bottom of the third. The lead batter walked and scored on a two-out double. Prescott's offense came alive for real in the top of the fourth as the Wolves sent 10 runners around the base path to go up 15-1 and put the game out of reach for all intents and purposes. With one down, Bullock was hit by a pitch. Yates and Miller walked to load the bases. Doug Young was hit by a pitch and got an RBI as Bullock scored. A wild pitch brought Yates in, while Morman's single scored Miller and Young. Nolen singled to bring Morman in, and scored himself on an error. Brady Jordan walked, went to second on a Harris single and advanced to third when Bullock was hit by a pitch for the second time in the frame The second wild pitch of the inning brought Jordan in and sent Yates to the plate. Yates broke the PHS season home run record with his seventh of the year. The record was set last year by Ben Jones. Yates's seventh, while emptying the bases of runners, brought his career total to 11, another PHS record, breaking Al Johnston's 10, set from 1996-98. Had the Wolves been able to hold the Hornets in check, the game would have ended after five innings. But, Blevins has a rich tradition of baseball history and fought back, scoring five times in the fifth. This cut the lead to nine runs for Prescott and extended the game. A lead-off error and single got the fifth underway for the Hornets. After a strike-out was recorded for the first out, Blevins got three straight singles, and another error, to score the five runs. This didn't set well with the Wolves as they sent four more around the squared circle in the top of the sixth. Ben Ratcliff opened with a walk. An out later, Bullock went yard for the second time of the game. Yates reached on an error and scored on a single by Miller. A wild pitch brought Miller in. Blevins, though, refused to roll over and play dead. The Hornets added three more in their half the inning to cut the lead to 10, but this was enough for a Prescott victory. The Hornets scored on three singles and a wild pitch. Yates went to 2-4 on the season as the winning pitcher. He gave up 10 hits, fanned 10 and walked five. The Wolves had a total of 11 hits, with Harris getting three. Bullock, Morman and Nolen got two each, with Bullock's being big knocks. Blevins pitchers fanned 13 Wolves, but also hit four batters and walked nine. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
