Wolves hammer Fouke, but stumble against ScrappersBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, February 11, 2004 in the Nevada County Picayune When it came to the Curley Wolves, Prescott's games were as different as winter and summer. Tuesday, Feb. 3, the Wolves had no problem whipping Fouke, 53-18, but couldn't make anything positive happen Friday, Feb. 6, as they fell to Nashville, 55-51. Fouke brought absolutely nothing to the game Tuesday, as the Wolves started by scoring from the opening tip, and had their way the rest of the night. The Panthers showed patience and worked the ball offensively, but couldn't hit from the floor or the line with any regularity. Prescott, on the other hand, ran up and down the floor, scoring almost at will. Period one came to an end with the Wolves up 16-1, and the Panthers hanging their heads. Period two was more of the same, as the Wolves continued doing what they wanted, while the Panthers struggled for each and every point. Halftime arrived with Prescott firmly in command 31-9. The situation remained pretty much the same in the third quarter, as the Panthers managed a total of three points in eight minutes, while the Wolves ran rampant. It could be said Prescott simply owned Fouke in the game. At the end of three, the Wolves led 45-12. Much of the third quarter was played by substitutes, as Coach Larry Newsom cleared the bench, getting everyone suited up in the game. Prescott was seven for 11 at the charity stripe, while Fouke hit four of nine at the line. Robert Malone paved the way for the Wolves with 17 points. Hyman led Fouke with seven points. The same could not be said when the Wolves made the trip to Nashville. Granted, winning in Scrapper country is hard, no matter what the sports, but Prescott simply couldn't get into its normal game and fell 55-51 in a game the Wolves should have won. The game started out ugly as Prescott won the opening toss and had its first shot blocked. The Wolves managed to score first, though, at the 7:02 mark. The 2-0 lead was the only time Prescott would lead in the game. Nashville came back and was up 5-4 with 5:09 showing, as both teams had fits trying to score. The officials didn't help, as they called "ticky-tacky" fouls all night. Prescott had its fourth foul with 4:20 left in the first. This was also about the time Nashville's Andre Jones found his range and began lighting the board up from the perimeter. At the end of one, Prescott found itself on the wrong end of a 21-10 score. The Wolves fought back in the second quarter, but couldn't get any closer than six points, as both teams were sloppy in handling the ball and mistakes dominated the frame. Halftime arrived with Nashville leading 32-26. There was little scoring in the third period, as neither team could find the bucket. However, Nashville got a break when R.J. Vanhook was called for a technical foul after disagreeing with an official on a three-second call with 3:56 showing. This put Nashville at the line and gave the Scrappers the ball. Prescott caught a bit of a break as both free throws were missed. At this point, the home team managed to post a 37-29 lead. This is what the score was when the period ended. Prescott opened the final eight minutes by hitting one of two free throws, but the Wolves were cold from the field and couldn't narrow the gap any further for a while. Both teams were in foul trouble as the officials called a tight game. The Scrappers, though, did a better job from the line than Prescott, which helped in the end. With 3:18 remaining, Nashville led 45-37. The Scrappers increased the lead to 50-42 with 50 seconds remaining, when the Wolves started finding the range. However, Prescott was forced to foul and Nashville began converting free throws. Still, the Wolves had a chance to come back though Prescott trailed 52-48 with 15 seconds left, but it wasn't to be as the Scrappers managed to hold on to 55-51 win.
