Royce Ann Barbaree told members of the Gurdon Rotary Club on Thursday, January 29, "People tell you that home is where your family is. Well my home is Gurdon. When I walk into work each day and see the people there, I know they are my family."

Barbaree works at the Central Arkansas Development Council/Gurdon Senior Adult Center were she wears several hats.

"Anyone who is 60 years of age or more can come each day and fellowship and have a good warm meal. A lot of people feel they can't come because there are so many myths about the center.

"First of all, it is not a handout. We suggest a $1 a day as a donation for a meal," said Barbaree.

Much of the funding for the center is federal, some from the United Way and some comes from grants. One of which comes from the Cabe's, which provides the center with an Activities Coordinator.

Gurdon's Center is the only one with an Activities Coordinator.

"We are always open for volunteers and more funding. Although our center is doing well and we are in no danger of losing it," said Barbaree.

On average the center usually has up to 66 in attendance a day.

For those who are unable to attend, hot meals are delivered to their homes.

Also, once every three months the center offers USDA commodities and for those who are eligible, they can get help paying for bills and making purchases. These conveniences are made possible through Senior Specialists, a group who works with senior citizens to insure their well being.

"I ask for the community's and Rotary's continued support. This center is so important to the community. The social setting can be the best thing for many seniors," said Barbaree.
