Devils stumble against CougarsBY MARTIN DOWNEYPublished Wednesday, January 21, 2004 in the Gurdon Times Three games were on the card Friday Jan. 16 and unfortunately for Go-Devil fans, the visiting Lafayette County Cougars went home with three wins. The first game of the night was the junior high ladies game. The junior high Lady Devils were defeated bringing their season record to 3-6. First quarter action started slow with most points being scored from the free throw line and ended with the Lady Cougars leading 7-5. Lafayette County extended its lead in the second quarter with good shooting and scoring opportunities on fast breaks. The Cougars led 20-15 going into the half. Gurdon came back in the third quarter and tied the game at one point and only trailed by two at the beginning of the fourth quarter. This momentum carried into the closing seconds of the game as the crowd came to life, but Lafayette County held the Devils off and won 40-36. Next the high school girls got their turn on the court, but the Lady Cougars were not as kind. In the first quarter, there was back and forth action with Lafayette County leading 18-12. In the second, the Lady Cougars broke the game wide open with an 11-0 scoring run and ended the half 39-23. From there, they slowed the game down and took control, taking time off of the clock and led 43-28. The Lady Devils tried to make a comeback in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late and Lafayette County closed out the game 53-45 bringing the Lady Devils record to 6-10. Lady Devil, Jernek Henry led Gurdon in scoring on the night with 11. The men's game was an intense fast-paced ride from beginning to end. The Devils started the game with a 7-0 run and led the Cougars 16-7 at the end of the first quarter. The action did not slow in the second quarter and Gurdon maintained a 33-25 lead going in at halftime. The turning point of the game came in the third quarter when Go-Devil Anthony McPeak was cut around his eye and had to leave the game. McPeak scored 11 on the night before the injury took him out. Shortly thereafter, Lafayette County took their first lead of the game. The Go-Devils tried to play catch-up in the fourth, but the Cougars were relentless and held on to win by a close 60-58 bringing Gurdon's record to 10-5. Randy Bell led the Devils in scoring with 22 on the night. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
