Poet Clayton Scott spent time working with more than 100 students at Emmet Schools during the month of September.

After spending time with Scott, about 40 students wrote poems to enter in a poetry contest. Scott was able to work with the students through the Artist in Education Program sponsored by the Southwest Arkansas Arts Council.

Last week Scott returned to the school to recognize the winners in the school poetry contest.

Tenth grader Lauren Otwell won first place in the contest, eleventh grader Callie Dearinger - second place, eighth grader Kamryan Bennett - third place, tenth grader Angela Rodgers fourth place, and sixth grader Shane Palmer fifth place.

According to Scott, the students will have an opportunity to present their poems at a "Night of Poetry Reading" at the Paul W. Klipsch Auditorium in the Hope City Hall, Thursday night, March 25.

In addition to the those from Emmet, students from Hope, Spring Hill and Saratoga Schools will present their poems at the poetry reading.

Cindy Ward, fifth grade teacher and Artist in Residence Coordinator for Emmet Schools, said that Scott's work with the students help them develop artistic abilities that some of them didn't know they possessed.
