Into the VoidDear Santa, from JohnPublished Wednesday, December 24, 2003 in the Nevada County Picayune Dear Santa, Thought I'd drop you a line while I have the time and thank you for calling me to help you make sure children in Nevada County got presents this Christmas. We all know how busy you are this time of the year, and anything we can do to help you out, we're glad to do. This year, Santa, we received about 190 names of children in the county needing a little extra for the holidays, but what was really touching is how two families called to let us know they appreciated what we were doing to help, but you'd already been in touch with them and would be making their deliveries instead of us at the Picayune. We've also had a few who called, nearly in tears, thanking us for helping out and taking up the slack in your busy schedule. This is what it's all about, Santa, and it really makes our holiday even more special than it otherwise would have been. Seeing the look on the faces of the people as they received the gifts for their children is priceless. The Native Americans have a saying of not judging others until we walk a mile in their moccasins. For the last two years, I have had the privilege of walking a mile in your moccasins, or boots, to help those in need here in Prescott and Nevada County. It has helped me see and understand why you won't give up your job. It's a shame we can't keep this warm feeling year round. Could we do this little thing all the time, the world would be a much better and safer place. As for my own Christmas wishes, thanks, but no thanks. I have all I need and ask nothing for myself. I would, however, like to ask a safe return of all American soldiers from overseas as soon as possible. Their families need them home where they belong. Asking for an end to terrorism and terrorists is out of the question, because it's not in your ability to grant such a wish, be it for the holidays or any other time. Yet, if it's possible, a one-day reprieve from such violence would be greatly appreciated. Again, Santa, thanks for calling and asking me to help out. You knew we could count on the generosity of the people in Nevada County to pitch in and make this a successful and happy Christmas for the children. I'm looking forward to helping you out again next year, just to see the smiles it brings to the faces of those receiving the gifts. But, Santa, if it's all right with you, I think I'll get started a little earlier with the fund raising. Anyway, I just wanted to thank you and let you know I'm here when you need me. Sincerely yours, John Miller Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
