Chamber parade a success in Gurdon once againBY AUTUMN PENNINGTONPublished Wednesday, December 24, 2003 in the Gurdon Times "The Gifts of Christmas" was the theme of Thursday nights Gurdon Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade. Festivities were scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on the band stand in front of Austin's Variety, however the only entertainment showing up to participate was Alan Wimberly leader of the Gurdon Go-Devil Marching Band and Jill Plyler. Wimberly entertained the small crowd on hand by playing the The national anthem and a Christmas song on his saxophone. He then sang Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Plyler sang "Where Are You Christmas" and "Light a Candle for Me." Tanner Capps son of Jon and Lori Capps volunteered to entertain by singing Silent Night, O' Christmas Tree and Jingle Bells with no instrumental back-up. He was quite a crowd favorite judging from the cheers. Jon Capps and Michelle Anderson then drew for the gift certificates given by area merchants. Winners of the $50 certificates were Dinah Buck and Lora Pope and the $100 certificate went to Brandon Ellis. The winners can spend their prize at any of the Chamber of Commerce members business'. Several floats entered the parade. First place went to Center Grove Methodist Church whose float was a giant package with baby Jesus inside and the wise men walking behind it. Second place went to Miss Lisa's Nursery school. All of the boys and girls were dressed like little presents. Third place went to the GHS Jr. Class who did a wonderful job decorating their float with giant presents and lights. First place received $150, second was $125 and third was $100. Winners for having the best decorated vehicle were; first place, the GHS senior cheerleaders, second was Eastern Star Baptist Church and third went to the Clark County Sheriff's Office with its decorated boat. First received $75, second $50 and third received $25. Some four-wheelers were decorated and entered in the parade. Max Currey took home $25 for winning first, Drew Kuhn took home $15 for second and Ethan Pilgreen received $10 for third. Several motorcycles and scooters entered the parade this year. Max Brown received $35 for winning first place, Brittany Purifoy won second and received $25 and Justin Uchtman won $20 with his Harley. In all the parade turned out to be a success. A huge thank you goes to those who work so hard on it and volunteer their time to make it happen. A special thank you goes to Wimberly and Jill Plyler for taking time to entertain. And last but not least, to Tanner Capps for not being shy and sharing his spirit of Christmas with the town.
