Elwood DeWoodyPublished Wednesday, December 17, 2003 in the Nevada County PicayuneElwood A. DeWoody, 92, of Monroe, La., formerly of Pine Bluff, passed early Friday morning, December 12, 2003, at St. Francis Specialty Hospital. Elwood was born November 11, 1911, a son of the late John Ashley and Zula May Godley DeWoody in Nevada County. He was reared and educated in Nevada County. After high school Mr. DeWoody attended Southern State University (previously known as Magnolia A&M). Woody married Floy Jewel Gentry, on January 23, 1933, in Nevada County. She preceded him in death on August 11, 1997. In 1938, he did experimental farming for the White Feed Mill, in Pine Bluff. In 1941, Woody started working for the Sanderson-Porter Construction Company at Pine Bluff Arsenal. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II, in the Pacific Theatre, in a destroyer escort aboard the USS Vamon, DE644. After returning to civilian status, he taught returning servicemen in Nevada Schools for three years. He also started working for the Blaw-Knox Construction Co., as a General Superintendent, at the Pine Bluff Arsenal, and in several other states, including Washington. Elwood was a member of the Pine Ridge Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder. He was a member of the Prescott Lodge #80 AF & AM and the Sahara Shrine Temple. Mr. DeWoody is survived by one daughter, Shirley DeWoody Osborn of Ft. Worth, Tex.; two grandchildren, Kim and her husband Gerald Golden of Monroe, La. and Kelly and his wife Mary Osborn of Ft. Worth, Tex.; four great-grandchildren, Ray and Leia Golden and Joshua and Rachel Osborn; one half brother, Thomas Alsobrook of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two half sisters, Lillian Langston of Searcy, and Pauline Ratcliff of Stamps. He was preceded in death by one sister, Patty Jane. Funeral services were Monday, December 15, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Mount Moriah United Methodist Church in Prescott with Rev. Jerry Westmoreland officiating. The family received friends Sunday, December 14, 2003, from 4-6 p.m. at Ralph Robinson and Son Funeral Home, 807 Cherry Street, Pine Bluff, Ark.
