Wolves take care of business with trio of wins against GurdonBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, December 17, 2003 in the Nevada County Picayune Prescott had its way with Gurdon Friday, Dec. 12, as the Wolves posted a trio of wins. Prescott 53 Gurdon 33 The Wolves got off to a slow start, trailing 11-10 at the end of one, but pulled away in the last three quarters of the game to post a 53-33 win. The Devils won the tip, were fouled and scored the first point from the charity stripe. There was little scoring in the first quarter, as Gurdon held a 4-2 lead with 5:58 left, and was up 9-2 with 4:28 showing. At this point, the Wolves went on an 8-2 run to end the period, but still trailed 11-10. Gurdon tried to slow the pace in the second quarter to no avail, as the Wolves started finding the range for the bucket. The squads were up and down the court, with plenty of action for the fans, but neither could score consistently until Prescott went on a 10-3 run in the last three minutes of the half to take a 28-18 lead. The second half was pretty much the same for the visitors, as shot after shot found mostly iron, primarily because of the Wolf defensive pressure. Still, Gurdon did manage to cut Prescott's lead to one at 28-27 with 5:21 showing. But, the Wolves went on another run, outscoring the Devils 14-2 in the last five minutes of the third period. Gurdon found itself with a mountain to climb at the start of the fourth quarter, as the Devils trailed 42-29. The fourth period saw no scoring for the first four minutes. But the Wolves remedied the situation with 11 points, while allowing four in the frame. Robert Malone was the game's leading scorer with 24 points. Ray Smith followed with 11 for the Wolves. Randy Bell led the Devils with 13 points, while Brian Allen chipped in 10. Gurdon was two of seven from the free thrown line, while the Wolves hit 15 of 29. Wolverettes 60 Lady Devils 26 It wasn't like the old days when Prescott and Gurdon's girls played, but any win over the Lady Devils is a sweet one for the Wolverettes. There was little scoring in the first part of the game, with Prescott leading 5-2 with 5:40 showing. The Lady Devils had their shots, but found little more than backboard and rim all night long, as the ball refused to fall. Prescott, on the other hand, didn't have such a problem, as the Wolverettes, led by Tammy Harris's 20 points, found the bottom of the bucket with regularity. The second quarter was much the same as the first, with Gurdon getting the shots, but not getting them to fall. The Lady Devils could manage but four points in the second eight minutes. The Wolverettes, meanwhile, found the range beyond the arc and started hitting three-pointers. Prescott's defense also proved to be more than the Lady Devils could handle, as the Wolverettes forced several turnovers in the period. Halftime arrived with Prescott leading 31-10. The Lady Devils were late coming out of the locker for the third quarter, and had no warm up shots at all, while Prescott's girls came out, got loose and were ready to rock in the second half. Period three opened with Prescott stealing the ball and scoring. Gurdon remained frigid from the field. Prescott started the period with a 7-0 run and never let up, putting 22 points on the board during the third eight minutes of the outing. The Wolverettes held a 53-18 lead at the end of three. Jody Coward cleared his bench in the fourth quarter, getting everyone dressed in maroon and white into the game for some experience and playing time. The subs held their own with the Lady Devils, allowing but eight points, while adding seven. Tammy Harris paced Prescott with 20, with Deloris Steuart adding 12. Alicia Bell led Gurdon with eight points. Gurdon was three of four from the free throw line, while Prescott hit three of 11. Lady Devils 25 Cubettes 31 Prescott's Cubettes made it 3-0 over Gurdon, opening the night with a 31-25 win over the Lady Devils. The Cubettes led 8-6 after one, but the score was knotted at 10-10 by halftime. While Gurdon stayed close in the third, the Cubettes maintained the lead at 18-14, and put on a clinic in the final six minutes. The Lady Devils were led by A. Woodbury's game leading 13. Shanta Bell led Prescott with 11. Gurdon was nine of 19 from the line, while Prescott hit seven of 14. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
