Plenty is available for those who shop locally this ChristmasBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, December 17, 2003 in the Nevada County Picayune At the retail merchants meeting on Dec. 9, it was said there's nothing to shop for in Prescott. However, anyone who believes this is sadly mistaken, or may be wanting to spend their money at Nieman-Marcus. There are plenty of reasons for residents to shop in Prescott this holiday season. Visits were made to several businesses in Prescott recently to see what they have to offer local shoppers. At Western Auto there are bicycles, and what child doesn't want a bike for Christmas? There are also appliances of all kinds, televisions, freezers, wagons, furniture, tools and power tools. Not interested in any of this. OK, Fred's has clothing for the entire family, from underwear to shoes to pants, dresses and shirts. Fred's also offers stuffed animals, all kinds of toys, grandfather clocks, knick-knacks, tools, footballs, basketballs, compact disc players, karaoke machines and DVD players. These are just a few things offered here. At Holly's Health Mart there are watches, perfumes, jewelry, Hallmark ornaments, Beany Babies, Russ stuffed animals, curios, figurines, decorative photo frames, snow globes, cologne and cake candles. The Fashion Shop offers a good line of women's clothing and accessories, nightwear, purses, coats and jewelry. Town and Country has wallets, belts, shoes, wallets, billfolds, purses, clothing for men and women and ties (but remember, dad likes things other than ties folks), as part of its inventory. Going to the Garden Gate, shoppers can find picture frames, candles, ornaments, various arrangements, lotions, angels, lamps and Curley Wolf items. At Dollar General there are figurines, candles, clothes, toys, caps, dolls, models, remote control toys, electronic games, lamps and slippers. Now shopping at truck stops may sound a little strange, but both Love's and Rip Griffins offer a wide range of interesting gift ideas. Love's has a makeup vanity for little girls, trucks, wooden motorcycles, stunt vehicles, caps, large rag dolls, and movies on both VHS and DVD format, along with cassette tapes, travel gear, home theater systems and portable TV/DVD combos. Rip Griffins offers jackets, hats, caps, trucks, figurines, coffee mugs, penny banks in interesting shapes, dolls, shoes, some baby toys, TV/DVD combos, knives, pewter figurines of wizards and dragons, crystal figurines, movies in both DVD and VHS format, electronic scooters, a turbo shoe polishing kit, briefcases, 12 volt neck massagers for drivers, a 12 volt coffee maker and voice activated toy cars. Exit 44 doesn't have as extensive a line, but does have knives, cassette tapes, movies, mugs, clocks and radio equipment. Prescott Flowers has something for almost everyone. There are cookbooks, canister sets, fresh and silk flowers, place mats, napkins, candles, gourmet coffees and teas, crystal, willow tree angel collectibles, frames, lamps, potpourri, jungle items (seeing is believing), vases, books, cards, gifts for teens, stuffed animals, Razorback and Curley Wolf items, jewelry, and for men items for golf, football, baseball, ducks and fishing. There are also cowboy items (western theme, not the Dallas football team), and things for babies. The trip around Prescott still isn't done. At Two Morrow's Petals, there are lace tablecloths, wall hangers, ornaments, napkins and mantle scarves, there are also candles, crystal, fresh and silk flowers, happy face mugs and, pay attention here, hand crafted children's rockers made in the shape of recliners. These chairs are made by an old style furniture craftsman and are only available at Two Morrow's Petals. Next is a trip to the Farm and Garden Store, where there's a lot more than just feed, seed and plants. There are Montana Silver belt buckles, watches and jewelry items, along with knives, Georgia Boots (always a popular gift), porcelain dolls, clothing, snow globes, saddles, tack, hats, caps, garden supplies, tools, pottery, cameos, whatnots, and oak rocking chairs. This trip will wind up with a visit to the Whistlin' Gopher. Here shoppers will find Beanie Babies, stuffed animals, scented candles, picture frames, Curley Wolf items, wind chimes, flags, angel figurines, memory books and interesting pens (again, seeing is believing). This, by far, isn't everything available in Prescott, nor was every business visited simply because time wouldn't allow. But, for the discriminating shopper, there's plenty to be purchased locally for the holidays, and the rest of the year for that matter.
