Gurdon drops three games to arch-rival Prescott Friday nightBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, December 17, 2003 in the Gurdon Times It was a rough night for Gurdon basketball teams as the Devils visited Prescott Friday, Dec. 12. The home team came away with three wins, taking the junior and senior girls games, along with a victory in the senior boys contest. Gurdon 33 Prescott 53 The Devils jumped out to an 11-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, but went cold from the floor for the remainder of the contest. The Devils won the tip, were fouled and scored the first point from the charity stripe. There was little scoring in the first quarter, as Gurdon held a 4-2 lead with 5:58 left, and was up 9-2 with 4:28 showing. At this point, the Wolves went on an 8-2 run to end the period, but still trailed 11-10. Gurdon tried to slow the pace in the second quarter to no avail, as the Wolves started finding the range for the bucket. The squads were up and down the court, with plenty of action for the fans, but neither could score consistently until Prescott went on a 10-3 run in the last three minutes of the half to take a 28-18 lead. The second half was pretty much the same for the Devils, as shot after shot found mostly iron. Still, Gurdon did manage to cut Prescott's lead to one at 28-27 with 5:21 showing. But, the Wolves went on another run, outscoring the Devils 14-2 in the last five minutes of the third period. Gurdon found itself with a mountain to climb at the start of the fourth quarter, as the Devils trailed 42-29. The fourth period saw no scoring for the first four minutes. The drought was broken, but Gurdon was only able to put four points on the board in the frame. Randy Bell led the Devils with 13 points, while Brian Allen chipped in 10. Prescott was led by Robert Malone's 24 point outing. Ray Smith added 11. Gurdon was two of seven from the free thrown line, while the Wolves hit 15 of 29. Lady Devils 26 Wolverettes 60 The Lady Devils shared the same unfortunate luck as the Devils, as Prescott posted a 60-26 win in the game. There was little scoring in the first part of the game, with Prescott leading 5-2 with 5:40 showing. The Lady Devils had their shots, but found little more than backboard and rim all night long, as the ball refused to fall. Prescott was more consistent in scoring, and took an 18-6 lead at the end of one. The second quarter was much the same as the first, with Gurdon getting the shots, but not getting them to fall. The Lady Devils could manage but four points in the second eight minutes. The Wolverettes, meanwhile, found the range beyond the arc and started hitting three-pointers. Halftime arrived with Prescott leading 31-10. The Lady Devils were late coming out of the locker for the third quarter, and had no warm up shots at all. Period three opened with Prescott stealing the ball and scoring. Still, Gurdon had its share of shots, but remained frigid from the field. The Wolverettes held a 53-18 lead at the end of three. In the final frame, the Lady Devils started finding their stroke from the perimeter, but it proved to be a case of too little, too late. Alicia Bell led the Lady Devils with eight points. Tammy Harris paced Prescott with 20, with Deloris Steuart adding 12. Gurdon was three of four from the free throw line, while Prescott hit three of 11. Lady Devils 25 Cubettes 31 Gurdon's junior Lady Devils did better than their senior counterparts, but still fell, 31-25, to Prescott. The Cubettes led 8-6 after one, but the score was knotted at 10-10 by halftime. Gurdon stayed close in the third, but trailed 18-14. The Lady Devils were led by A. Woodbury's game leading 13. Shanta Bell led Prescott with 11. Gurdon was nine of 19 from the line, while Prescott hit seven of 14. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
