Former Gurdon man turns inventorBY AUTUMN PENNINGTONPublished Wednesday, December 3, 2003 in the Gurdon Times Born in Gurdon and being a descendant of Roy G. Murphy, father, Walter and Lela Murphy, grandparents, Pete and Gladys Benson, aunt and uncle and Oris and Alice Taylor, great-aunt and uncle, Roy "Dusty" Murphy has since moved to El Dorado, Arkansas and become an inventor. In 1999 Murphy started developing the Back Stop. The back stop is an item placed in the back of a truck to protect the back glass and other surfaces. For example, when loading a riding lawnmower or a four wheeler, sometimes they scrape against the back of the vehicle and could even break out the glass. The product is described to offer safety and security when loading large items, equipment or vehicles into the bed of a truck. With the Back Stop in place, surfaces are well protected; yet it fold away compactly when it is not in use. Murphy came up with the idea after he obliged his daughter's request to drive their four wheeler onto his truck. She rode onto the truck successfully; but instead of breaking to stop the wheeler, she hit the gas. The ATV went trough the back glass fo the truck. His daughter was injured and so was the truck. However, Murphy's invention is not yet on the market, he hopes to have it ready soon. He is now dealing with manufacturers and hopes to be a part of new truck accessories soon. More information about Murphy's invention can be obtained by calling (800) 940-9020. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
