Wolve send Dollarway packing part 2

Published Wednesday, November 19, 2003 in the Nevada County Picayune

Dollarway began at its 28, lost nine yards on three plays with the final coup de grace coming with Moore being sacked at the 19, thereby forcing the Cards to punt.

The punt was fielded by Lewis at the Card 49 and returned to the 46.

Prescott made it to the 32 before the drive stalled and ended when Martin was unable to connect with Butler on fourth down.

With 3:24 left in the third, the Cards marched from the Dollarway 33 to the Prescott 11 before time expired.

The final 12 minutes began with Moore missing connection with Reggie Lee. Still, the Cards fought to the Prescott six only to see the drive end when Lee was stopped for no gain on fourth and five at the six.

It was time for some old-fashioned smash mouth football from the Wolves. Butler carried to the 10, with Lewis moving the ball to the 15. Martin gave the Wolves a first down gaining six on a quarterback sneak.

The Wolves continued in this vein, getting to the Prescott 47 before the drive stalled and a punt was required.

Burton fielded the punt at the Dollarway 23 and took it in for an apparent touchdown. Prescott fans, though, breathed a collective sigh of relief when the play was called back and the Cards penalized for an illegal block.

Instead of having six points on the board and a chance to cut Prescott's lead to one, the Cards were instead on the Wolf 33.

Still, the drama and suspense was far from over as the Cardinals battled to the Prescott one on 10 plays.

Throughout the night, the Cards had relied on Terrence Lee to gain vital yardage and keep drives alive. With 1:08 left in the game, Lee was given the ball at the one, and promptly met by a wall of maroon and white. Lee was stopped for no gain, with Prescott taking over on downs.

Three quarterback sneaks later, the Wolves had moved from the Prescott one to the six and the clock showed triple zeros.

"We played a great team from the 8AAA," Prescott Head Coach Greg Smith said of Dollarway. "They're strong and powerful.

"We had adversity with players out. Prescott is 10-1 and had to deal with adversity in all 10 wins. If we get the whole package together on the field, we'll be dangerous in the playoffs."

Smith urged Prescott fans to make the drive to North Little Rock and take over CAC stadium.

Unofficial stats show the Wolves to have been in control of most areas.

Prescott was seven of 16 in passing for 95 yards and a touchdown. Dollarway was two of eight for five yards with an interception.

Both teams punted three times, Prescott for 121 total yards, and Dollarway for 97.

Both teams fumbled three times, losing one, and each squad's quarterback was sacked once.

Prescott had 19 first downs, to 10 by the Cards.

The Cards were flagged four times for 25 yards, while Prescott was hit three times for 15 yards.

The Cards gained more yards on the ground than Prescott, 149-130.

However, the Wolves outgained Dollarway 225-154.

Prescott ran 53 offensive plays, while the Cards snapped the ball 44 times.

Butler was Prescott's leading ground gainer, carrying 16 times for 87 yards and a touchdown.

The Wolves will be on the road for round two of the state playoffs, heading to North Little Rock for a date with the CAC Mustangs.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
