Tricks and treats abound in Wolf win part 2Published Wednesday, November 5, 2003 in the Nevada County PicayuneHook was given a breather and replaced by Tristan Stuart, who scored his first touchdown on his second carry of the night. The score came on a one-yard plunge with 4:36 to go. Fufa's point after put the score at 42-14. One more touchdown would have evoked the mercy rule as the Wolves would have been 35 points ahead. This would have forced the clock to run unabated the remainder of the game. This, though, didn't happen. There was no more scoring in the third. Fouke punted on its next drive, with Prescott taking over at the Wolf 43. Martin was picked off in the endzone by Cox when it appeared the Wolves would managed to get the mercy rule put into effect. Martin's arm had moved the ball to the Fouke 10 before the pick. Two plays netted Fouke nine yards as the third period came to an end. The final 12 minutes started with Sutton gaining 19 on a keeper. He followed this by finding a receiver behind the Prescott secondary for a 44-yard touchdown. The PAT made it 42-21. Fouke attempted an on-side kick, only to see Sean Hart fall on the ball at the Prescott 48. Five plays later, the Wolves were again in mercy rule range as Prescott scored on a 13-yard run with 8:46 to go in the contest. Fufa's PAT went wide left, leaving the score at 48-21. Fouke took over at its 40, only to see Sutton picked off four the fourth time, this time by Eli Ratcliff at the Prescott 29, with 8:10 showing. The Wolves went to the bench, giving younger players valuable minutes for the future. The subs played hard, but fumbled against the Panther first string defense. Fouke took over at the Prescott 41 with 6:17 remaining, and fired its final offensive salvo of the night as Sutton broke loose on a 41-yard run. The point after ended scoring, at 48-28. Prescott had two more shots at scoring, moving from the Panther 46 to the 11 before losing a fumble. The second shot came when Fouke turned the ball over on downs at its 20. Prescott made it to the eight, before Coach Greg Smith called the Wolves off and had Ryan Roberson take a knee on consecutive plays. Unofficial stats show the game to be close. In passing, the Panthers held the edge as Sutton completed nine of 20 for 172 yards with four interceptions. The Wolves were six of 11 for 78 yards in the air. Prescott punted twice for 70 total yards, an average of 35 yards per punt, while Fouke punted once for 27 yards. The game was relatively penalty free, as Prescott was flagged twice for seven yards, and Fouke was hit three times for 20. The Wolves fumbled twice, losing both, while the Panthers put the ball on the ground seven times, coughing it up four times. Both quarterbacks were sacked once in the game. Prescott held the edge in first downs, 21-18, while the Panthers held the edge in offensive plays, 54-47. The Wolves gained 416 yards on 36 carries, while allowing 191 yards on 34 runs. Prescott averaged 11.6 yards per carry, while the Panthers averaged 5.6. This gave Prescott a total of 494 offensive yards, with Fouke earning 363. Vanhook carried 19 times for 307 yards and four touchdowns. This sets up a showdown for the 7AAA conference title between Prescott and Ashdown in the final regular season game. Both teams are undefeated in league play. The winner not only takes the crown, but is assured of being at home the first two games of the playoffs. The Wolves need to get several players healthy for this game, including Lewis, Vanhook and Jason Butler, who saw little action against Fouke. The Wolves will need all the fan support Prescott residents can provide, along with playing a near perfect game against the Panthers. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
