Wolves continue winning ways part 2Published Wednesday, October 29, 2003 in the Nevada County PicayuneThe Cats received to open the second half, and started at the 23. Three plays later, though, Mena punted for its final time of the night. The punt went from the Cat 24 to the Prescott 13 with the help of a long roll. All this meant in the long run, was Prescott's offense could show it's ability to drive the length of the field and control the clock. The Wolves ran 13 plays to cover the 87 yards and used almost six minutes off the clock. Martin's arm accounted for most of the yardage, but the drive was capped with Vanhook going in from the one with 4:54 left. At one point in the drive, Vanhook was hit when he was two yards out of bounds. There was, however, no flag. The officials, though, did hit the Cats with an unsportsmanlike conduct call later on after Martin hit Smith at the 12 and a Mena player made an unsavory comment. Fufa's point after made it 27-0. After a return to at the 29, the Cats immediately went backwards due to a holding call, which put Mena's offense at its 19 to start. The Cats ran eight plays, were aided by a facemask call against Prescott, but still couldn't find a way to score. Mena managed to drive to the Wolves's 37 before the Wolfpack "D" stepped up and sacked Adams. Prescott wound up taking over on downs at the Wolf 48 with 47 seconds left in the third. In all, the Wolves ran eight plays to score touchdown number five. Again, Martin's arm moved the ball downfield, as he connected with a variety of receivers, including Smith, Vanhook, and Stueart. The touchdown came with Martin hitting Smith with a nine-yard pass with 9:50 left in the game. Fufa's PAT put the score at 34-0, one point shy of the mercy rule. Following a short kickoff, where the Cats had to fall on the ball at the Mena 39, the visitors began marching backwards, losing four yards on two plays. Third down saw new quarterback D.J. Bates complete Mena's second, and last, pass of the game, to Mike Wood for a 14-yard gain to the 49. On fourth down, Brewer gained the one yard Mena needed for a first to keep the drive alive. A facemask call moved the ball 15 yards closer to Prescott's endzone at the Wolf 26. Here, though, the drive ended, as did Bates's time under center. Stueart broke through the line, buried Bates at the 40, causing a fumble. Stueart battled to gain control of the loose ball and scampered 60-yards for Prescott's final touchdown of the night, and the second one scored by the defense. Fufa's PAT made it 41-0 and invoked the mercy rule wit 6:49 left in the contest. While the Wolves substituted heavily to give younger players game experience, Mena left its starters in. The Cats took over at the Mena 22 and drove to the Prescott two with the clock running continuously. However, the subs had no intention of allowing the Cats to score and ruin the shutout. On the final play of the game, Mena's fourth quarterback of the game, Johnston, was brought down for a loss at the three. Unofficial statistics show the Wolves the dominant team in most categories. Prescott's offense was 17 of 23 in passing for 179 yards and a touchdown. Mena was two of 10 for 40 yards with three interceptions. Prescott punted once for 27 yards, while Mena booted twice for 100 yards. The Wolves led in penalties, being flagged six times for 50 yards, while the Cats were penalized five times for 31 yards. Both teams fumbled twice, with Prescott losing one. Mena recovered both of its fumbles. Both quarterbacks were sacked three times by the opposing defense. The Cats had more first downs than Prescott, 15-13. Mena's rushing game outgained Prescott 171-103, with the Cats snapping the ball 60 times on offense, while Prescott ran 42 offensive plays. Vanhook was Prescott's leading ground gainer, carrying the ball 14 times for 120 yards. This was an average of 8.6 yards per carry. What hurt the Wolf rushing game was the three sacks, which cost Prescott 26 yards. Overall, though, Prescott ran the ball 19 times for 103 yards, or an average of 5.43 yards per carry. Mena ran the ball 50 times for 171 yards, or a 3.42 yard per carry average. Prescott won the battle of total yardage, 282-211. The Wolves will end the regular season with a pair of road games. On Halloween night, Prescott travels to Fouke for a date with the Panthers. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
