Devils gun down Outlaws part 2

Published Wednesday, October 29, 2003 in the Gurdon Times

The punt was downed at midfield where the Devils took over.

With time running down in the half Gurdon acted fast to get back on the scoreboard.

Nolan passed out of bounds to kill the clock. From there, he went deep with a pass that was tipped off of the hands of a defender into the waiting arms of Devil receiver Ben Gooding, who outran another defender for a 48-yard touchdown. The extra point attempt failed and the score was 13-0.

The Outlaws took over and could not get into the endzone before the half ended.

Dierks got the ball back at the start of the third quarter and started on the 20.

They picked up eight on the first three downs and drew Gurdon off sides on fourth down. McLaughlin took the ball for another first down on the following play.

Courtney Berry broke threw the line and wrapped up Manasco for a loss of four. McLaughlin shot right back though, and found Manasco for a 32-yard pass play. Two plays later he found Manasco again for 22 yards and a touchdown. The extra point was no good and the score was 13-6.

After a penalty for a kick out of bounds and a re-kick the Devils took over on the 36.

The Gurdon offensive line started to wear the defense down as the Devils marched down the field.

Runs by Williams, Marcel Johnson and Hunter Johnson on nine plays put Gurdon on the Outlaw eight. Nolan then took the ball on the keeper to finish the drive with a touchdown. Gurdon tried for two but passed incomplete and the score was 19-6.

Dierks started the drive at its 25.

Manasco ran for seven yards on the first two plays. McLaughlin then hit Stone and Watson on the next two plays for 15 more. He kept the ball for a gain of one as the third quarter ended.

McLaughlin started the fourth with a 41-yard touchdown pass to Stone who streaked down the sideline for six. The two-point conversion failed putting the score at 19-12.

Gurdon started on its 37 after the kickoff.

Camron Kennedy was shut down on first down, but Nolan went to the air and found Williams for nine yards. Hunter Johnson leapt over the line for a one-yard gain and the first down. He added another yard on first down.

Williams took the ball for six yards on the next two plays. With a fourth down situation Gurdon set up for a punt, but faked and Williams took the snap and ran all the way down to the seven yard line for a huge play.

Marcel Johnson took the ball the rest of the way on first down and after the two-point conversion failed the score was 25-12.

Dierks took over, but not for long.

Gurdon backed the Outlaws up 10 yards on the next three plays and forced them to punt.

The Go-Devils took over around midfield. Kennedy got things going with a pick up of seven. Hunter Johnson added two yards and Williams gained seven. Kennedy took the ball for eight more yards and Williams carried for five.

Marcel Johnson then broke free for 20 yards, clawing his way to within a foot of the goal line. He then strolled in on the next play for a touchdown. The extra point was good and with 1:38 left in the game, the Outlaws ran down the clock ending the game 32-12.

After the game head coach John Pace told his players it was another great win. He even allowed them to do some jumping jacks on the "D" in the middle of the field. That was payback for the past few times Dierks has been in Gurdon and did the same on the Devil's "G". And, of course, no one in Gurdon has forgotten how Dierks forced the Devils to forfeit when officials failed to show at a game several years ago after first agreeing to play the game on a Saturday afternoon.

Pace attributed the win to a strong defensive effort and players stepping up when others were injured. Pace and the Devils look forward to next week, when an improving Foreman team comes to town for the last home game of the season. The game will begin at 7:30.
