Wolves feast on Cobras, 54-8 part II

Published Wednesday, October 22, 2003 in the Nevada County Picayune

Saying the Cobras had no idea how to stop Prescott's offense would be an understatement, as Wolf backs almost literally ran at will against the Fountain Lake defense during the game.

Following Prescott's score, the Cobras went three and out. The defensive showcase was highlighted with a sack by Johnny Burton, as he caught Gray at the Cobra 29 on a second and 10 situation.

The punt rolled dead at the Prescott 35 with 8:25 to go in the third.

This proved to be the Wolves's longest possession of the night, as Prescott ran eight plays before Vanhook went in from the three. During the drive, Lewis was replaced under center by Ryan Roberson, who connected with Lewis for a 13-yard pass.

However, this was followed by the Wolves being called for illegal motion and moved back five yards. The penalty didn't matter much, as Vanhook broke free and made it to the eight before being brought down. Two plays later he went in for his third touchdown of the game.

Fufa's PAT made it 47-8 with 4:48 to go.

This gave Prescott a 41-point lead and put the mercy rule into effect. The mercy rule was instituted last season and states when a team is behind by 35 or more points in the second half, the clock continues to run.

The kickoff went out of bounds, pushing it back from the 40 to the 35. The next boot was fielded by Justin Johler and returned to the Prescott 49.

The Cobras ran six plays, getting to the Wolf 33 before losing yards and the clock ending period three.

Facing a fourth and nine, the Cobras has nothing to lose by going for a first down. This, though, failed to materialize when Robert Block picked off Gray's pass and returned it to the Prescott 36.

Lewis hit Ray Smith with a pass on first down, with Smith fighting to the Cobra 36. Lewis kept on the second play, making it to the five, with Block putting Prescott's final points on the board with the next snap.

Fufa's PAT made it 54-8 with 9:20 to go in the game.

It was one, two, three, punt for the Cobras, with Prescott taking over at the Fountain Lake 35 when the kick was shanked.

A new crew of players went in for Prescott as the Wolf coaches substituted heavily. Still, the subs made it to the Cobra 18 before Fountain Lake was able to force a fourth down situation.

This is when the Cobra players showed a distinct lack of class. Fufa was sent in to attempt a 36-yard field goal with about 30 seconds left. As the teams lined up, a Cobra player jumped offsides.

The ball was moved five yards closer, with the teams again lining up. Once again, a Cobra player jumped offsides to prevent Fufa from attempting the kick.

Unofficial or not, the stats show Prescott dominated the game.

Both teams threw the ball six times in the game. Fountain Lake had four caught, but two of the receptions were by Prescott defenders. The two completions to Cobra players cost Fountain Lake 17 yards.

Prescott was three of six for 54 yards in the air.

The Cobras punted five times for 158 yards. This is an average of 31.6 yards per punt. Prescott returned one punt for a 47-yard touchdown. The Wolves didn't punt in the contest.

On the penalty side, Prescott was flagged six times for 30 yards, while Fountain Lake had three flags thrown for 15 yards.

The Cobras fumbled three times, losing one. Prescott fumbled four times, coughing it up twice.

The Cobra quarterback was sacked once, while Prescott's signalcallers were untouched in such a manner.

Prescott put 23 first downs up, while the Cobras managed nine.

When it came to the ground game, Prescott ran for 417 yards in 27 carries. The Cobras gained 175 yards rushing on 42 attempts.

Overall, the Wolves ran 33 offensive plays to 48 by Fountain Lake.

Prescott gained a total of 471 yards offensively, while allowing 158.

Lewis was Prescott's leading rusher, gaining 215 yards on nine carries. Vanhook was next, running 13 times for 190 yards.

Prescott will be playing its final home game of the season Friday, Oct. 24, when the Mena Bearcats come to Cummins Stadium.

The Prescott coaches have said Mena is a question mark as the Cats have been up and down all year. They lost to Fountain Lake, played tight with Nashville for a half, but whipped Fouke soundly on Oct. 17.

The question is, which Mena team will be showing up for the game with Prescott this week. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
