Wolves feast on Cobras, 54-8, in important homecoming win part IBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, October 22, 2003 in the Nevada County Picayune Lightning struck the Fountain Lake Cobras repeatedly Friday, Oct. 17, as Prescott posted a 54-8 win at Cummins Field. The Wolves celebrated homecoming properly with the thrashing of Fountain Lake, even though Prescott went into the game without the services of several starters. Zach Martin was sidelined by a concussion received against De Queen, but will return against Mena Friday, Oct. 24. Jason Butler played, but had bruised ribs. He later left the game after getting hit on the right knee. Cole Hillary missed the game after suffering headaches early in the day. He was taken to Arkansas Children's Hospital for examination. Dusty Talley had a broken thumb, while Donnie Bearden had a broken toe. The game was marred by a blatant display of poor sportsmanship on Fountain Lake's part when Urfan "Fufa" Taghizada was called on late for a field goal attempt. The outcome was settled as there were only 30 seconds left and the mercy rule in effect. However, instead of allowing Fufa to make the attempt, Cobra players repeatedly jumped offsides as the game came to an end. The game began with Fountain Lake winning the coin toss and starting at the Cobra 15 after Mike Makin fumbled the opening kick at the five, but managed to gain possession and gain 10 yards. However, it was three and out for the Cobras, as the team lost 11 yards on three plays and had to punt. The first lightning bolt struck when R. J. Vanhook fielded the kick and returned it for a touchdown with 9:41 showing. Fufa's point after made it 7-0. Starting at the Cobra 35, after the kickoff, Makin found a hole on the right side of Prescott's defense and raced 65 yards for a touchdown. The Cobras opted for the two-point conversion, which made it 8-7 with 9:25 still remaining in the opening frame. Of course, Fountain Lake had fired its only bolt for the game, while the Wolves were just getting started. Luther Stueart fielded the pooch kick at the Prescott 44 where the Wolves set up shop. A.J. Lewis, starting at quarterback, winged an incomplete pass after avoiding heavy pressure. Vanhook followed gaining a yard on second down, before Lewis found a gap and sprinted 55 yards for Prescott's second touchdown of the night with 8:22 to go. Prescott's two-point conversion attempt failed, but the Wolves were up 13-8. Starting at the Cobra 25 after the kick, Fountain Lake ran three plays and was again forced to punt. Prescott began its third drive at the Wolf 43. Three plays netted a total of seven yards and forced the Wolves into a fourth and three situation. Opting to go for it, Lewis again found a hole and sprinted 49 yards for his second touchdown of the quarter with 4:19 remaining. Again, the try for two failed, but Prescott now led 19-8. Starting at the 20, the Cobras were three and out once again as Prescott's defense was allowing nothing. The punt rolled dead at Prescott's 46 with 3:04 showing. The Wolves needed but one play, as Vanhook broke free for a 54-yard score, his second of the period. This made it 25-8, and the Wolves brought Fufa out for the PAT attempt. His kick split the uprights to make it 26-8 with 2:53 on the clock. Pete Gray fumbled the kick at the five, but managed to make it to the 16, where he was brought down. The Cobras gained nine yards on three plays and faced a fourth and one at the Fountain Lake 25 with time running down in the first. Opting to go for it, Ozzy Overton found a hole on the right side of the defensive front and fought his way to the Prescott 49 as time expired. The Cobras managed to get to the Wolf 11 before Gray's pass was picked off in the end zone by Vanhook with 8:19 left in the half. Starting at the 20, the Wolves marched downfield, covering the 80 yards in four plays. The drive ended when Lewis broke loose on a 35-yard touchdown run with 6:32 showing. The PAT by Fufa made it 33-8, and ended scoring in the first half. For the remainder of the quarter, turnovers plagued both teams and prevented either from getting or keeping a drive underway. Prescott came out fired up after the halftime break and put two touchdowns on the board in the third. The Wolves, though, were hit with a delay of game call before play began as the halftime show went longer than expected (primarily because of the length of the Fountain Lake band's performance). Still, the Wolves began drive one of the second half from the Prescott 26. Play one saw Vanhook lose four yards. The loss didn't matter as Lewis broke loose on the next snap for a 78-yard touchdown romp with 11:06 on the clock. Fufa's PAT made it 40-8.
