Wolves could travel undefeated because of brackets in AAABY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, October 22, 2003 in the Nevada County Picayune It's possible the Curley Wolves could be 12-0 and be on the road for the quarterfinals of the state playoffs. This is what the Prescott School Board was told at its regular monthly meeting, Tuesday, Oct. 14. Assuming the Wolves go undefeated in regular season and win the first two games of the playoffs, which would be at Cummins Field, the way the bracket fell this year, the team could be forced to travel in week three of the playoffs. The Wolves are on the lower portion of the bracket and will be playing teams from the 8AAA in the first round of the playoffs. If Prescott is the 7AAA champions, the Wolves will be at home the first two weeks. In week two, should Prescott prevail over the fourth place team from the 8AAA, the Wolves would host a team from either the 2AAA or 3AAA. Prescott Athletic Director David Maxwell said he and the coaches don't like it, but there's nothing to be done. "When the AAA passed regulations for the playoff system, the bracket was drawn up on a rotational basis," he said. "There could be a time when this area is on the top part, but it's now set where the 7AAA and 8AAA play each other in the first round. "The next three games will tell a lot and could set up a showdown with Ashdown. Mena is a sleeper and I think they could get good when they play us. Fouke has a resurgent offense, so we have to be prepared. We can't overlook anyone." Prescott's football program, junior and senior high, he said, is 21-2-1 on the year to date. PHS is 6-0 and 3-0 in the conference. One of these wins, though, was a 2-0 forfeit by Bismarck in week four. The junior high team is 3-2-1. When Mena comes to town on Oct. 24, it will be the last time the Wolves play at Cummins Field during the regular season. Prescott is on the road the final two games, playing Fouke, Oct. 31, and Ashdown on Nov. 7. It's setting up where the conference title could be decided outright when the Wolves travel to Ashdown. In other Fall sports, he said, the Wolverettes won the district tennis tournament, with Lindsay Poole and Madeline Taylor the doubles runners up. They qualified for the state tourney as a team. Meagan Martin won the singles title and also advances to state. Zach Martin was runner up in men's singles, and qualified for state as the No. 2 seed. Martin's final match was a five-hour, three-set marathon requiring two different courts as the first didn't have the lighting required to finish the match. Prescott's golf teams also fared well, finishing second in both the district and regional tourneys. Misty Avery missed qualifying for the girl's state golf tourney by four strokes, while the boys team, consisting of Ben Hale, Drew Richards, Matt Haynie and Chase Haynes, are headed to the state match at Heber Springs. Willie Wilson, Dean of Students, gave the activity and progress report, saying one of the areas of concern has been disrespectful attitudes of students toward teachers. However, he added, this is at most 10 children and is being taken care of. Students took their mid-term tests last week, with four tests on Tuesday and three Wednesday. According to Wilson, there was a lot of writing on all of the tests. Parent-Teacher conferences have been scheduled for Oct. 23, from 2:3-9 p.m. A pre-survey will be given to each parent who shows. The survey, Wilson said, will provide information to the Parental Involvement Committee to determine the parents not there. Once this information is collated, community based meetings will be held for these parents. The Parental Involvement Committee report was provided as well. Wilson said teachers have had their in-service for it, and flyers were distributed at the first home football game. Committee planning meetings have been held, with a Parent Day planned for Nov. 3. The committee is also putting a parent kit together containing information on the school. Home visits, he said, are done for those children who display moderate to serious discipline and academic problems. Some are referred to the Therapeutic Family Service of Gurdon for non-medicated counseling. Wilson closed telling the board Madeline Taylor has been designated a National Merit Scholar semi-finalist. Pearl Bailey presented data on the Prescott District Education Association (PDEA). Earnestene Johnson, she said, was selected to represent the local and state organization at the National Education Association Minority Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Ga. With there being no school Nov. 6-7, teachers from around the state, she said, will be in Little Rock for the annual Arkansas Education Association Professional Development Convention. There will be about 30 workshops held during this two-day period. Some of the workshops include: classroom management, Benchmark testing, the No Child Left Behind Act, and parental involvement in school. The board approved out of state travel for Johnson to Atlanta, as well as James Cannon so he could attend the National FFA Convention in Louisville, Ky. Travel for Linda Benton was approved for the National FCCLA Cluster meeting in Dallas, Texas. The travel expenses for Cannon and Benton will be paid through the Perkins Fund. At the beginning of the meeting, the board was reorganized as this was the first meeting following the September election. Kay Hendrix was elected president with Jeff Haynes being named vice president. Pat Blake will be the secretary. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
