Wolves manage to get out of De Queen with 28-21 winBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, October 15, 2003 in the Nevada County Picayune Penalties helped De Queen's offense move downfield for its second touchdown of the game. After Williams had been sacked, the Wolves were hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct call which gave the Leopards a first down. Later in the drive, a pass interference call put the ball on the Prescott eight, with Randy Hays scoring from the two with 2:01 left in the third. The PAT made it 28-14. De Queen attempted an on-side kick, but a Leopard defender hit the Prescott receiver, who had called for a fair catch, before the ball came down or had gone 10 yards. This gave the Wolves the ball at the Prescott 45. The officials made up for a call against the home team by flagging Prescott for clipping on the next play, moving the ball back 10 from the spot of the foul, which put the ball on the 26. The Wolves were unable to overcome the deficit and faced a fourth and 34 as the third ended. The punt opened the fourth quarter, rolling dead at the De Queen 39. Williams found Bennett down the sideline with a 69-yard touchdown strike. The PAT cut the Wolves's lead to 28-21 with 11:44 left in the game. Starting at the Prescott 31, the Wolves moved to the Leopard five before Lewis, who took over at quarterback for Martin, who suffered a concussion earlier, was picked off by Scott in the endzone. Scott ran the ball out to the 10, but saw it moved to the five on a clipping call. De Queen ran 13 plays, moving to the Prescott 12 before a screen from Williams to Scott on fourth down lost yards and gave the ball back to the Wolves. Butler ran twice, moving the pigskin to the Leopard 47, with Vanhook gaining three before Lewis took a knee to end the game and preserve the win. Unofficial statistics show the game even, except for penalties. Prescott was flagged 11 times for 122 yards, while De Queen was penalized six times for 35 yards. The Wolves were 12 of 21 in the air for 215 yards and two touchdowns, but suffered two interceptions. De Queen was 11 of 22 for 212 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Prescott punted three times for 123 yards, with a minus seven yards in return. De Queen punted five times for 205 yards, giving up seven yards in return. Williams was sacked four times by the Wolves, while the Prescott quarterbacks were caught three times. Prescott fumbled once, but recovered it. The Leopards put the ball on the ground three times, losing it once. Prescott held the edge in first downs, 20-18. However, De Queen ran 54 offensive plays to Prescott's 51. The Wolves racked up 202 rushing yards, while allowing a scant 78. Prescott had a total of 418 offensive yards, while allowing 290. The Leopards ran 32 times for 78 yards, or an average of 2.4 yards per carry. Prescott ran 30 times for 202 yards an average of 6.7 yards per carry. Vanhook was the leading ground gainer with 147 yards on 17 carries. Butler was next with six rushes for 57 yards. It's homecoming Friday night as the Fountain Lake Cobras come to town. The Wolves are sure to welcome the visitors accordingly. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
