Wolves edge Nashville, 28-26Published Wednesday, October 8, 2003 in the Nevada County PicayuneThe Wolves, though, were unable to score in the third quarter, having only one possession in the period. Prescott managed to drive from the Wolf 43 to the Scrapper 28 before turning the ball over on downs with 2:49 to go in the frame. Nashville, starting at its 33, moved to the Prescott 30 as the third came to an end. Three plays into the final 12 minutes, Jones scored from the 12 to put the Scrappers in the lead for the first time at 26-22 with 11:15 left in the game. The Wolves showed the ability to run the clock as well, as Prescott drove 61 yards in 5:17 to take the lead and seal the win. Zach Richards made a fair catch following the Nashville touchdown, putting the Wolves at the 39. Two plays netted six yards before Lewis kept the drive alive with a 14-yard run to the Scrapper 41. Two plays later, though, the Wolves were staring at a third and 15 after an offside call against Prescott. Martin connected with Ray Smith, who made the biggest catch of the night. Smith fought to the Nashville 15 to keep the drive alive. Prescott was flagged for illegal procedure on the next play and moved back another five yards. This only gave the Wolves time to work the clock even more. However, the drive ended with Martin hitting Lewis with a 10-yard touchdown pass to make it 28-26 with 6:32 to go. The try for two was no good. No one on either side left the game, as Nashville, starting at its 28, marched to the Prescott 37 before the Wolf "D" stepped up again and forced the Scrappers to turn the ball over on downs with 2:08 to go. The game was far from over at this point, as far as anyone knew. Prescott, however, quickly put any hopes of a Nashville comeback to an end when Vanhook broke loose for 40 yards before being pushed out of bounds at the Scrapper 10 with 1:18 to go. Instead of running up the score, Prescott's coaching staff decided to protect the ball and run the clock out. Prescott dominated the passing game, connecting on 11-17 passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns. Nashville was three of seven for 65 yards and suffered one interception. Prescott punted once for 27 yards. The Wolves were heavily penalized in the game, getting flagged 11 times for 81.5 yards. Nashville had seven penalties called for 35 yards. The Scrappers led in first downs with 24, while Prescott had 16. Nashville fumbled twice, but recovered both. Prescott put the ball on the ground once, recovering it. The Wolves ran the ball 25 times for 167 yards, but gave up 277 yards on 56 runs to Nashville. Overall, Prescott ran 42 offensive plays to Nashville's 63. The Wolves posted 317 offensive yards, while the Scrappers had 342. Vanhook was Prescott's leading ground gainer with 103 yards on 12 carries. Prescott averaged 6.68 yards per carry, while Nashville had 5.0 yards per carry. The Wolves will be on the road Friday night heading to the Swamp as they visit De Queen for another important 7AAA conference game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
