Chamber auction a success; event raises more than $8,000BY AUTUMN PENNINGTONPublished Wednesday, October 8, 2003 in the Gurdon Times Gurdon's Second Annual Gurdon Chamber of Commerce Live and Silent Auction was another success this year. According to chairwoman Anita Cabe, the auction brought in approximately $8,000 which is slightly more than last year's event. More than 100 tickets were sold, with many of them being to the citizens of Gurdon, but several came from Arkadelphia and other surrounding areas to help out. The event began with the viewing of auction items and bidding on the silent auction items. Tables were set up around the wall of the cafetorium with items spread out along with the sheet to mark your bids on. Many had fun competing with family and friends for items they wished to purchase, especially when Chamber of Commerce President Laurie Pilgreen announced for the final minute of bidding. Bob Goodman was the auctioneer for the live auction. One of the biggest hits of the live auction was the cinnamon rolls and yeast rolls made by Sue Nelson, and donated by the Gurdon Primary lunchroom. Some said there just wasn't enough of them to go around. An old school desk from Gurdon High School was auctioned off and made for an interesting sale as Mary Frances Ricketts and Mike King bid against one another. Larry Thomerson and Leonard Gills battled between one another for a mated and framed drawing of the old Gurdon High School which was done and donated by Heidi Jester. Gills ended up with the drawing. Anita Cabe suggested it be hung in the new high school. According to the Chamber, a special thank you goes out to the Gurdon High School lunchroom ladies who prepared the meal of baked ham, chicken and dressing, green beans, corn, cheese and broccoli, sweet potatoes, seven layer salad, fruit and rolls. Not to mention the cheesecake for dessert. Also the Gurdon Senior cheerleaders helped in serving drinks to all present. The auction was a success and is hoped to become bigger and better in the years to come. Proceeds from the auction go to the Gurdon Chamber of Commerce for special events in the community and the other half goes towards the Gurdon High School Auditorium Fund.
