Nevada school election scheduled Sept. 16

There will be one school election held in Nevada County this month.

While the Prescott and Emmet school districts have no opposed races, and no other issues to be decided in the Sept. 16 election, no polling places will be open and all ballots will be cast either early or by the absentee method.

However, the Nevada School District has one contested race for Zone 3. This is a four-year term, with the position currently held by Don Callicott. Callicott's term actually expired last year, but no one sought the seat on the board.

The two vying for this position are Helen M. Haynie and Brandon Rhodes. Zone 3 represents the Cale area.

Voters will also be voting on a 34.8 mill school tax. This is not a new tax, nor an increase, but it must be voted on annually to show the district's patrons what they will be paying.

Earlier this year, the Nevada School Board voted to restructure the district's bonded indebtedness, extending it 20 years. However, the district did not seek a millage increase at the time.

The final issue on the ballot is for school uniforms. Should the measure pass, it would take effect for the 2004-2005 academic year.

Nevada Superintendent Rick McAfee said he's heard talk both for and against school uniforms, but little has been said by the community at large.
