Published Wednesday, September 10, 2003 in the Nevada County Picayune

Gurdon ran three plays and lined up to punt. However, the snap sailed over the punter's head and was downed by a Devil player at the 14.

An offside call moved the ball to the nine, with Vanhook bulling his way through the middle of the pack for a touchdown with 1:39 on the clock. Fufa's kick made it 28-8.

Gurdon took over on the 33 for its next possession. The Devils were aided by a pass interference call on first down, moving the ball to the 47.

Lacy made it to the 49 before Prescott's defense stiffened and sacked Nolan at the Devil 39 as the third ended.

The Wolf-pack "D" opened the fourth quarter as it closed the third, by sacking Nolan, this time back at the 20, forcing a punt.

The kick rolled dead at the Prescott 49 with 10:53 left in the game.

Vanhook fumbled on the next play, with Gurdon recovering at the Wolf 49.

Three snaps saw the Devils lose two yards and line up to punt once again. The boot rolled dead at the Wolf six-yard line.

Martin failed to connect with Smith on first down, with Vanhook giving Prescott some breathing room to the 13 on second down. Martin kept on a quarterback draw, getting to the 25 and keeping the drive alive.

Lewis stepped in under center for a play, but winged an incomplete pass to Zach Richards.

On second and 10, Vanhook took the handoff on a delayed draw, saw the hole open in the middle of the line and raced 75 yards for Prescott's final score of the night. The point after was blocked, but the Wolves were up 34-8, with 7:29 left.

It was three and out for Gurdon on its next series, with the Wolves taking over at the Gurdon 43.

Prescott's coaches began clearing the bench, trying to make sure everyone wearing maroon and white got into the game.

The subs moved to the Gurdon 18 before the drive stalled and the ball was turned over on downs.

However, Gurdon fumbled, with the Wolves recovering at the Devil 29 with 32 seconds left.

Having some fun, the Wolf coaches put sophomore lineman Sean Hart in as tailback. Hart proved to be a load for the Gurdon defense as he carried to the 18.

But, instead of rubbing it in with a meaningless touchdown, Prescott's coaches had Ryan Roberson take a knee on the next play to run out the clock.

Unofficial statistics show the Wolves were 5 of 22 in passing for three touchdowns and 190 yards.

Gurdon's aerial attack was more efficient, 8 of 21, for 83 yards.

Prescott rushed the ball 25 times for 176 yards, while Gurdon's ground game gained 69 yards on 36 attempts.

The Wolves punted twice for a total of 47 yards. This averaged out to 23.5 yards per punt. Neither was returned.

Gurdon punted eight times for 225 yards, or an average of 28.125 yards per punt. However, Prescott had 39 yards in returns.

The Wolves were penalized heavier than Gurdon, though the number was similar. Prescott was flagged eight times for 70 yards, while Gurdon saw laundry fall seven times for40 yards.

On a positive note, the Wolf-pack "D" registered three sacks, while Martin wasn't brought down behind the line of scrimmage, though he was hurried several times.

Gurdon won the battle of first downs, registering 13 to Prescott's 12.

Overall, Gurdon ran more offensive plays, 57-47, than the Wolves. However, Prescott racked up 366 total yards, while the Wolf-pack "D" gave up 152.

On the down side, Prescott fumbled four times, losing three of them. Gurdon also put the ball on the ground four times, but lost two.

Vanhook carried nine times in the game for 132 yards. Martin ran twice for 10 yards, with Hart carrying once for 11.

Robert Block ran four times for 20 yards, while Tristan Stuart had four carries for a negative 11 yards late in the game. Roger Muldrow had a pair of runs for 11 yards, while Roberson carried twice for three yards.

The Wolves averaged 7.0 yards per carry, while Gurdon's rushing average was 1.92 yards.

The Wolves will be in the friendly confines of Cummins Field Friday, Sept. 12, as Hampton's Bulldogs come to Prescott. Hampton posted a win in its season opener as well.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
