Changes made for fair pageants, all now moved to Saturday nightBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, August 13, 2003 in the Nevada County Picayune Boots, bulls and blue ribbons is the theme for the 67th Annual Nevada County Fair. This year, the fair will be held earlier than usual. The fair and livestock show are scheduled for Aug. 23-31, at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. The fair will open at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23 with a rodeo. Sunday will feature a gospel concert at 2 o'clock. A Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce community coffee will be held honoring the fair queens Monday, Aug. 23, at 10 a.m. at the Potlatch Building. From 3-6 p.m. Monday, items may be entered in arts, crafts, photography, baked goods, quilts, household articles, food preservation, fall gardens, field crops and furniture. Livestock can be entered at this time, as the poultry and rabbit building will be open. The real festivities begin Tuesday, Aug. 26, starting with entering items from 7-10 a.m. The official judging of the flower show and exhibits will be done at noon. Cattle, swine, sheep and goats can be entered from 12-5 p.m., with the fair parade scheduled for 6 o'clock. This is also the time when all the exhibit buildings and the midway open. A rodeo will be held at 7 p.m., with the talent show scheduled for 7:30. Exhibit buildings open at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, as does the midway. The livestock show will be held at 5:30, with 6 o'clock set aside as the rain date for the parade, if necessary. The highlight on Thursday, Aug. 28, are the livestock premium sale. The premium sale will beheld at 5:30 p.m. The pageants have been moved to Saturday night, Aug. 30, with the first round scheduled to start at 6 o'clock. The pageant will feature baby miss, children 0-24 months; tiny miss, children 2-3 years; little miss, children 4-5 years; and petite miss, girls 6-7 years. This will be followed by the pageants for the older girls beginning with young miss, for ages 8-10; junior miss, for those 11-12; teen miss, for contestants 13-15; and the fair queen, for those 16-21. Saturday will be another big day at the fair as it kicks off at 10 a.m. with a horse show. The midway also opens then, with the exhibit buildings closed until 5 o'clock. Bull riding will be held at 7 p.m., with the livestock released at 9 o'clock.
