School starts next week with new faces in classroomsBY AUTUMN PENNINGTONPublished Wednesday, August 13, 2003 in the Gurdon Times It's almost time to start back to school. As short as summer break may seem to school age children is has been three months since school let out. Several children in the community were asked what they had done during the summer days to keep busy. Most answered with, swimming, riding bikes, playing baseball, cheerleader practice, hanging out with friends, visiting grandparents, talking on the phone and sleeping in. School is scheduled to start back on Wednesday, August 20. Lists for supplies that will be needed have already been posted. Teachers and other faculty have been seen back at the schools preparing classrooms and curriculum for the students. Some changes have taken place with some teachers since school let out. At the primary school, Linda Hulan will return to teach fourth grade. Hulan was teaching Alternative Schooling for a period of time. Also, Polly Ferguson will be coming to primary school from middle school to work as a resource teacher. Ferguson was teaching at Cabe Middle School. At a special school board meeting held on August 4, Cabe Middle School Principal, Jeff Alexander announced his resignation. Alexander has been principal at the middle school for almost 10 years. Alexander was recently offered the Superintendent position at the Kirby schools. Alexander felt it would be a good career move. As of now no one has been hired to fill Alexander's position, but the board plans to make a decision by Monday, August 11. Also hired at the Cabe Middle School is Gurdon school alumnus Stephanie Cagle Manning. Manning was hired to teach seventh grade math. Manning graduated from Gurdon High School in 1994. Her husband Rusty is currently teaching at Gurdon Primary School. Changes to other middle school teaching schedules are: Linda Bullard will be teaching eighth grade math, Belinda Whitlock will be teaching all sixth grade math and Teri Dillard will be teaching all fifth grade math. Coach Todd Lewis resigned from his coaching and teaching position. Lewis' coaching position was replaced by his brother Hank, who will also be teaching Social Studies. Charles Capps, Austin Capps grandson will be taking Lewis' Biology class. Tammy Alexander recently resigned to take a job in Nashville, Ark. Her journalism and sophomore English classes will be taught by Crystal Lacklear. Dawn Higgs resigned from her Junior English and oral communications teaching position.
