School supply drive underwayBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, July 30, 2003 in the Nevada County Picayune It's time, once again, for the school supply drive to help underprivileged children be prepared for the upcoming school year. Mary Godwin, executive director of the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce, said the Chamber and Presbyterian Church are partnering again for the community school supply drive. The supplies will be for primary and middle school students in all three of Nevada County's school districts. "We're asking monetary donations be sent to the Chamber," Godwin said. "Any amount is welcome. Parents can also pick up extra supplies when buying them for their children and drop them off at the Chamber or church." Godwin asks the monetary donations be made by August 4, and all other donations be made no later than Aug. 11. School begins Monday, Aug. 18, and the students will need to have the supplies before then. She said the packages will be put together on Aug. 13, with the church being open Aug. 14-15 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. for parents to come by and apply for the supplies. Any supplies left over will be distributed equally among the three school districts. Last year, Godwin said, the drive helped about 90 students, as donations were made by the area civic clubs, individuals, churches and other organizations. For working parents, she said, who aren't able to drop their donations at the Chamber, someone will come to the business and pick them up if they'll call. No donations will be picked up at individual homes, though. The Chamber's number is 887-2101. Some of the supplies needed include: scissors, paper towels, waterless anti-bacterial hand sanitizer, glue, glue sticks, crayons, tissue paper, back packs, plastic mats, map pencils, pencils, pocket folders with brads, school boxes, zippered pencil pouches, red grading pencils, manilla folders, composition books, erasers, rulers, three ring binders and dividers.
