Vernia PhillipsPublished Wednesday, June 11, 2003 in the Gurdon TimesVernia Joyce' Phillips, 68, of Hope died Sunday, June 1, 2003. Mrs. Phillips was born September 27, 1934, in Columbia County, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd and Myrtice Derrick Nelson. She was a retired line supervisor for Champion Parts and was a member of the First Christian Church of Hope. Survivors include one son, Terry Wayne Phillips of Hope; one daughter, Gwendolyn Thomerson of Gurdon; two sisters, Ima Compton of Springhill, La., and Bobbie Jean Hobday of Phoenix, Ariz.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Myrtice Nelson; husband, Billy Wayne Phillips; brother, Morgan Nelson; and sisters, Doris Sutton, Louise LeBlance and Ruby Lee. Graveside services were held Tuesday, June 3, at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Herndon Funeral Home of Hope.
