There will be plenty of high-flying excitement at the 16th Annual Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce Chicken and Egg Festival.

Mary Godwin, executive director of the Chamber, said a freestyle BMX bicycle team will put on three shows on the street in front of the City Park. The festival will be June 6-7, with the BMX show on Saturday.

The BMX team is from Fort Worth, Texas, and will perform feats of daring-do from noon until 2 p.m. All shows are free, but these performers are professional and the stunts they perform shouldn't be attempted.

The festival, she said, will kick off at 5 p.m. with the Rotary Club's Chicken in the Rough Dinner at the pavilion. The menu includes grilled chicken, roasted corn, baked beans, cole slaw and a roll, along with a drink.

Tickets for the dinner will be $6 each and can be purchased from any club member. The dinner will be from 5-7 p.m.

On Saturday, she said, the Kiwanis Club will hold its annual breakfast from 7:30-9:30 a.m. at the pavilion. This menu includes eggs, biscuits, bacon, milk, gravy and orange juice.

A lunch featuring chicken and egg dishes will be available at the Garden Getaway Bed and Breakfast. The lunch will be $5.50 and include egg salad sandwiches, chicken salad in a puff pastry and assorted sweets and treats.

Godwin said local and other food vendors have already signed up for the festival. These food vendors include the shaved ice trailer, funnel cakes and one selling peanuts and root beer.

The variety show will take place on the festival stage from 5-9:30 p.m. This event showcases the talent of local and area individuals and groups.

Brandi Karlovec is in charge of the variety show, which will include the Southern Angels, Lexi Karlovec and Rudy Preston.

Other performers scheduled include: the Hempstead County Melody Boys, Angela Preston, Munn's Chapel Youth Choir, Heather Sands, Rachel Hale, Whitney Lowdermilk, Winnie Clark, Tamara Shada, Allie Ramos, Leandra Dillard, Sherry Overton, Karen Richards and Amanda Dunlap.

The festival will again feature the Little Mr. Rooster and Little Miss Hen Pageant. This has turned into one of the most popular events, as the younger participants get to strut their stuff on-stage. This year, the contestants will be wearing either a sun suit or shorts set.

Contestants must pre-register for the pageant, with entries due in by June 4. There will be four age divisions.

There has been a change in the chicken and egg cooking contest, Godwin said. This year, instead of there being two separate events with different divisions, and the cooks picking their own recipes, there will be one division.

Those entering will be required to cook a chicken casserole. It can be any kind of chicken casserole, but it must be a casserole containing chicken as the primary ingredient.

The younger festival goers will enjoy learning the train ride will be back. This is one of the most popular things for children to do, as they get to ride around the park on a "train" pulled by an all-terrain vehicle.

And, the old favorites will be back as well. This includes the 5-k run-walk, the men's and women's softball tournament, tennis tournament, 3-on-3 basketball tourney and the horseshoe contest, which will begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Anyone planning on having a team or participating in any of the athletic events should contact the Chamber and register as soon as possible.

There will be plenty of old favorites at the festival, too, including the ever popular golden egg hunt. Godwin said the clues have already been developed and are ready for the hunters.

In addition, there will be coloring contests for the children, the cackling and crowing contest, jump rope, the balloon liftoff, hula hoop contest and the Mr. and Miss Drumstick Pageant.

An added attraction will be races at the Prescott Speedway, starting Saturday at 1:30 p.m. There will be ATV races, dirt bike races, go cart races and bicycle races.
