Chamber told of aquatic parkBY AUTUMN PENNINGTONPublished Wednesday, May 21, 2003 in the Gurdon Times Gurdon's Chamber of Commerce held it's monthly meeting on May 13, 2003, at the Gurdon Senior Adult Center. Few members were on hand for the monthly meeting. Only six were present. President Laurie Pilgreen expressed concerns over the low attendance number and said she hopes the attendance picks back up. Jim Johnson, a representative for Arkadelphia's new aquatic park was on hand to pass out brochures and answer any questions one might have about the park. The pamphlet reads, "Arkadelphia's Aquatic Park is the newest attraction for fun in the sun. Located in Feaster Park, the pool layout offers recreation, exercise, and instruction." Features of the park are: an eight-lane, 25-meter swimming area, one-meter springboard, drop slide, open flume water slide, umbrella style water fountain, bench with spraying heads, frog slide, floating play pieces, arching sprays, shaded area in the pool, zero depth entry, grassed area for sunbathing and concessions. The park will be open daily starting May 24 and ending on September 1. The park will be open on weekends from September 6-28. The park's hours are Monday through Friday from 1-6 p.m., Saturday's from 10:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Sunday's from 1-6 p.m. Daily passes cost $3 for anyone 12 years of age and under and $4 for anyone 13 and up. Passes can also be purchased at 12 for $35 and 20 for $50. Season passes for individuals cost $100 or a family of four can purchase season passes for $150. Not only does with park offer water fun, but it also has swimming lessons available for all ages at the cost of $40 per session. Session one is from June 2-12. Session two runs from June 16-26. Session three goes from July 7-17. Session four is from July 21-31. Session five will be the last session for lessons and be from August 4-14. More information about the park can be found out by calling (870) 246-5499. At last month's meeting Chamber members discussed moving the caboose located at the old Chamber of Commerce park in Gurdon, to the Gurdon park on Highway 67. The group agreed the caboose needs a facelift, but knows the caboose will get used more by children playing at the Gurdon park. At the May meeting, the group discussed possible expenses it would face by moving the caboose. It is not clear how much it would cost, however, Pilgreen said she had already talked to Palmer's and Rickett's. The Chamber members also discussed the importance of applying for and receiving grants in order to do improvements to the City of Gurdon. The Chamber plans on looking into this further. After Tommy Potter's request was made to the Chamber at a recent meeting, Pilgreen said a letter is in the process of being written and will be sent to the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission in order to show the chamber's support in restoring the old Big Timber Lake. The Chamber will be making plans for the Chamber auction to be held soon. Anita Cabe is already gathering items for the auction. Last year the Chamber held it's first Chamber auction which turned out to be a success. The monies made from the auction were split and half went towards the Chamber and the rest went towards the Gurdon auditorium fund. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
