Bluff CityJerry McKelvyPublished Wednesday, April 7, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune Last week's news: The pollen has been flying around here this week. This is the time when we all have itching eyes and everything is covered with that lovely shade of green. The gospel meeting at the Church of Christ got off to a good start last Sunday with a good crowd present. Bro. Todd is doing a great job. If you are reading this on Wednesday, you still have time to attend the last service. Bill and Kay Sellers provided a fish supper for the Carmans and Nelsons last week. I am told they served some delicious crappie they caught on a recent fishing expedition. Funeral services were conducted March 27 for Lewis Pruitt of Gurdon. Burial was in Bluff City Cemetery. Our sympathy is extended to this family. Britt Carman celebrated a birthday and visited his parents in Bluff City last week. Here's some historical information for you. The oldest marked grave in Bluff City Cemetery is that of Charlotte Howard Fresby, who died October 23, 1863. The oldest marked grave at Ebenezer Cemetery is that of William M. Hackette, a child who died November 1, 1856. The oldest marked grave at the Gulley Family Cemetery is that of Leander A. Epperson, a child who died July 29, 1858. There are only about five marked graves in Nevada County older than the one at Ebenezer. They are located in Mt. Moriah, Corinth and Watts Cemeteries. The oldest is a grave in Watts Cemetery dated March 18, 1851. I'm sure there are many older graves that were only marked by a rock, but these cannot be identified. Our thought this week: "The first sign of maturity is the discovery that the volume knob also turns to the left." Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
