Rosston Council decides to sell old firetruck

Rosston will be selling an old firetruck for $500.

This decision was made at the Rosston City Council at its regular monthly meeting Monday, April 7.

Rosston Mayor Lewis Jackson said the Rosston Volunteer Fire Department will keep the truck it has, but had an old one to get rid of. The old truck had three tanks, one, though is being used on another firetruck.

The old truck, Jackson said, is in need of major repairs and can't be used on the road. The truck needs new brakes and a new rear end. However, the person who wanted to buy the truck was only interested in the motor.

The council needed little time to debate the issue and sold the truck to the Willisville buyer.

Jackson told the council about an audit done on the city's books. Recently an audit had been done for the city's water department, but this one was for the street and general funds.

The council, he said, will be getting a letter detailing the findings of the audit.

"There are some things we were told we need to do," he said. "We'll correct them."

One of the problems the city will be working to correct is keeping up better with the journal and receipt book.

Otherwise, he said, the audit went quickly and well, as everything else looked OK.

However, Jackson said, the city's general fund will have to pay the street fund back for monies used from it to help build the new fire station.

Jackson said he had been told there was no problem in doing this by a different auditor, but the one who did the latest audit said the city will have to repay the street fund.

This, though, doesn't have to be a lump-sum payment, he said, but can be done over time.

In addition, he said, some checks in 2000 were apparently put in the wrong account. The end result is the city's general fund owes the street fund about $8,000.

The city's general fund currently has $6,000 in it for the rest of the year.

Some street work will be done in Rosston this summer, he said, but not much. However, part-time employees will have to be hired to help with the repairs.

The council gave Jackson authority to hire the part-time help as needed.

One street, he said, will be widened, with the slopes opened up somewhat. This means trees will have to be cut back before the road can be graded.

Property owners involved have been contacted, Jackson said, with the work to begin as soon as the ground dries up more. The road will be graveled not blacktopped, with the ditches scheduled to be clear as well.
