Rosston streets to be repairedBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, March 12, 2003 in the Nevada County Picayune Several streets in Rosston are in bad shape and need to be repaired. This was the primary topic of discussion at the monthly meeting of the Rosston City Council, Monday, March 3. Rosston Mayor Lewis Jackson said a number of ditches also need to be pulled, but this work will have to be contracted out, as the county doesn't do work within city limits. However, nothing can be done until the rainy weather subsides and the ground dries out enough to get the work done, he said. The council gave Jackson the authority to handle the contracting street repair and ditch pulling. The city has $26,000 in the street budget, along with a certificate of deposit for $5,000 to get the work done with. "I don't know what we can do with this amount," Jackson said, "but we'll do what we can." There was talk of dumping a load of cold mix on the street in front of City Hall, where erosion has occurred. Jackson said the cold mix costs $1,000 a load, but holds up well. The council also approved paying half the cost of sending a girl to Girls State. This amounted to $75, with the Nevada School District paying the other half. The student going is Jessica Potts. A truck purchased from Meyer's Bakery, Jackson said, is too short to be used as a tanker truck for the fire department. If a 2,000 gallon tank was fitted onto the truck, he said, it would be top-heavy and could possibly turn over. Members of the Rosston Fire Department have asked the city to sell the truck and buy one with a frame long enough to fit a 2,000 gallon tank on. Nothing has been done with the truck since it was bought, Jackson said, adding it would be no problem for the city to get what it paid for the vehicle. The council tabled making a decision on the issue until the April meeting, so Jackson will have time to find a replacement truck for the fire department. The final order of business required a short executive session. Water Superintendent J.D. Luck asked for a raise, pointing out the council has had two raises in the last few years. The council approved a $50 per month raise for Luck, to begin in April. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
