Recently, eight Gurdon citizens and Rick Pyron from Beech Street Baptist Church, visited Guatemala.

Pyron was at Thursday, February 27, meeting of the Gurdon Rotary club to discuss his trip and the things learned while he was away.

The group was participating in Operation GO (Gospel Outreach).

The group's goal is to reach the people of Guatemala and teach them the Gospel of John and saturate Middle America with Christianity.

While on the trip the group visited with Larry and Sarah Plyler who are from Gurdon and have been working as missionaries for several years.

The group also worked with three journeymen from the International Mission Board.

"We were going out sow the seed of the word. For further reference it can be found in the Bible in Isaiah 55:10-11," said Pyron.

Pyron said the people from the pueblo where he and the others were staying, believed in God and Jesus. However, they believed in other spirits as well.

"They might attend church and read the Bible and then sacrifice a chicken later on that night. Darkness does prevail in Guatemala," said Pyron.

Pyron said he and his group did not spend their time just knocking on doors and telling a little about God.

"It was a preparation time. We would go to a neighborhood and pray for each house and the family's living there. Then we would proceed to talk with them and give out literature."

Pyron said there are lots of different cults working in Guatamala also. "We ran into several different cults while we where there. Some of which we were familiar with from the United States," said Pyron.

During the groups stay they handed out 3,302 copies of the Gospel of John, had 24 people saved and 17 people request in home Bible study sessions.

"It was a good trip, yet there is still so much to be done."
