Steuart slams Wolves to 51-49 win over Fountain LakeBY JOHN MILLERPublished Tuesday, February 5, 2002 in the Nevada County Picayune With 14.5 seconds left in the game the score was tied at 49-49 and Fountain Lake had the ball at mid-court. Fans packed into the Prescott Sports Complex were on the edge of their seats. Those from Fountain Lake were waiting to see if the Cobras could sink the last shot, or if the game would go into overtime. Curley Wolf fans were wondering whether or not the game would be extended, if the Wolves would lose or a miracle would occur and pull the game out. As the clock ticked down, Joe Steuart stole the ball, raced downcourt and with six-tenths of a second on the clock, slammed home the game winning bucket to make the final score 51-49. The game had been close all night, as neither team was able to dominate the other, or build much of a lead. At the beginning, the Wolves took the opening tip, scored and quickly built a 4-0 lead. Prescott looked to run, while the Cobras were more methodical, working the ball around the horn, trying for the best shot. This led to a lot of action, but few points in the opening frame, which ended with Prescott holding a slim 10-8 lead. The second quarter saw the squads swap buckets, with the Wolves finding a route inside, while most of Fountain Lake's points came from the perimeter. Late in the quarter, Prescott hit a cold streak allowing the Cobras to take a 17-15 lead. However, the Wolves then went on a 7-2 run to end the period with the score 22-19. Each of the 41 first half points was earned, as neither team gave an inch willingly. The Wolves scored to open the third stanza, but hit a period of turnovers, which allowed the Cobras to stay close and eventually take the lead. However, the game was tied several times in the quarter, and there were a number of lead changes. Much of the time it was Steuart leading the way for Prescott, with Jason Butler and A.J. Lewis coming to the forefront as needed, which was plenty. But, the Cobras managed to wrest the lead from Prescott in the waning moments and went into the fourth quarter with a 35-33 advantage. If nothing else, the final eight minutes were worth the price of admission. The Cobras opened with the ball, only to have it stolen with Prescott tying the game at 35-35. Fountain Lake began pressing the Wolves and saw Lewis dribble through the Cobra defense at times. Buckets were traded, with the fans rocking the house after Steuart slammed one home to tie the game at 39-39 and was fouled in the process. As loud as it was in the stands, it was wild on the floor. It seemed as though the two teams saved the best for last as they fought for the win. With 2:53 left in the game, the score was again knotted, this time at 45-45. Overtime loomed a major possibility. The teams scored twice each during the next 2:09, setting up the fantastic finish. The Wolves had tied the game at 49-49 with 0:44 left. The Cobras spread the floor offensively, hoping for a Prescott mistake and easy basket, along with taking as much time as possible off the clock. With 0:14.5 showing, Fountain Lake called time out with fans on both sides screaming. Then came the miracle, as Steuart caught a Cobra napping near mid-court, stole the ball and slammed it home for the win. Steuart led all scorers with 23 for Prescott, while Butler chipped in 14. Mike Wallace paced the Cobras with 12. Eric Womack contributed11, with Bob Wallace adding 10. Prescott was 5-9 from the line, while the Cobras hit four of five free throws. WOLVERETTES 29 LADY COBRAS 41 A 10-point second half spelled doom for the Wolverettes as they fell to the Lady Cobras 41-29. Both crews were patient in the first period, working the ball around the perimeter for the best possible shot. The Wolverettes were able to take an 11-9 lead at the end of the period, which featured fundamental basketball both offensively and defensively. Period two was played in much the same vein. However, Tammy Harris opened the second quarter with a three-pointer for the Wolverettes, as Prescott built an 18-11 lead with 5:22 showing. From there, though, points were few and far between for the Wolverettes as the Lady Cobras finished the first half with a 10-1 run. The second half saw Fountain Lake outscore Prescott 20-10. Harris led the Wolverettes with 18 points. Stephanie White was Fountain Lake's leading scorer with 17. Ilissa Hefley added 10. Prescott was five of six at the line, whereas the Lady Cobras were a perfect three of three. WOLVES 85 PANTHERS 81 The Wolves put on a scoring clinic in Tuesday night's game, as they beat Ashdown 85-81. Prescott led 23-12 at the end of one, building this to a 55-35 halftime advantage. In the third quarter, the Panthers fought back somewhat, but trailed 72-57. Prescott called off the dogs in the fourth period but made sure the win was preserved. The Wolves were 18-31 in free throws, while Ashdown converted nine of 20. Butler led all scorers with 33 for Prescott, while Steuart scored 23 and Lewis chipped in 13. WOLVERETTES 44 LADY PANTHERS 14 Prescott's Wolverettes enjoyed a rare blowout with a 44-14 win over the Lady Panthers of Ashdown on Jan. 28. Prescott led 11-7 at the end of one, building this to a 26-7 lead at halftime. The Wolverettes held Ashdown to two points in the third, while extending the lead to 41-9. Harris led the way with 20 points. WOLVES 45 EMMET 52 Prescott's junior varsity boys team fell short against the Emmet Eagles Thursday, Jan. 30, with a 52-44 score. The game was tied 15-15 at the end of one, with the Wolves managing a 29-27 halftime lead. However, the Eagles soared in the third, taking a 42-37 lead and holding on for the win. Luther Steuart led Prescott with 19 points. Chris White paced Emmet with 16, while Ron Rese and Jeremy Hunt added 10 each. The Wolves were seven of 15 from the charity stripe, while Emmet netted four of 13. WOLVERETTES 47 LADY EAGLES 16 The Wolverettes posted a convincing win over Emmet's Lady Eagles, 47-16. The Wolverettes jumped out to a 16-2 lead after one, and were up 28-9 at the half. By the end of three, Prescott led 47-12. Harris tossed in 25 to lead all scorers for Prescott. Felicia Hopson led Emmet with nine. The Wolverettes were six of seven in free throws, with Emmet hitting four of 11. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
