Wolverettes beat Ashdown, fall to Bismarck and De QueenBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, January 15, 2003 in the Nevada County Picayune Prescott's Wolverettes had a tough week as they dropped two of three games. The Wolverettes fell to De Queen and Bismarck, but hammered Ashdown Saturday night to make up for the other losses. PRESCOTT 50 ASHDOWN 27 In a rare Saturday night game, played to make up for a contest delayed earlier due to the prolonged football season, the Wolverettes posted a 50-27 win over Ashdown at the Prescott Sports Arena. The Wolverettes won the tip and scored first, showing more consistency than Ashdown early on, as the Lady Panthers had problems turning the ball over. The Wolverettes built a 6-0 lead before Ashdown scored on a free throw with 4:40 left in the first. The free throw gave the Lady Panthers renewed confidence as they battled back to end the first with the score 12-9 in Prescott's favor. The three-point difference was as close as the Lady Panthers got for the rest of the game. Prescott scored the first nine points of the second quarter to put the visitors in a hole Ashdown never dug its way out of. The Lady Panthers continued to turn the ball over, while the Wolverettes played solid and consistent ball. Halftime arrived with Prescott leading 24-15. After a slow start in the third quarter, the Wolverettes found their range from the field, while the Prescott defense shut the Lady Panthers down, giving up a scant two points in the frame, and those from the free throw line. The third ended with Prescott leading 41-17. At this point Prescott Coach Jody Coward went to the bench, substituting liberally and often. Ashdown managed to score 10 points in the final eight minutes, but had to work for each and every shot as the Wolverette subs played hard and hustled, while adding nine points to Prescott's tally. Tammy Harris led all scorers with 30 points, hitting 12 of 17 from the charity stripe. Katie Corbell paced Ashdown with 12 points. Overall, Prescott hit 18 of 26 free throws, while Ashdown converted seven of 11. PRESCOTT 27 BISMARCK 37 For the first quarter, the Wolverettes managed to stay close to the Lady Lions at Bismarck, but ultimately fell 37-27. Both teams scored eight in the opening quarter, with Bismarck taking a 19-10 lead at halftime. The Lady Lions managed to stay 10 points ahead of the Wolverettes in the second half, leading 26-16 at the end of three, and 37-27 at the final buzzer. Harris paced Prescott with 23 points. H. Rogers led Bismarck with 13, while H. Arthur added 10. Prescott was three of nine from the line, with Bismarck hitting eight of 18 free throws. PRESCOTT 43 DE QUEEN 51 Prescott had problems with De Queen's height, as the Wolverettes succumbed 51-43 to the Lady Leopards Tuesday night. De Queen scored the first five points of the game, while it took the Wolverettes almost two-and-a-half minutes to get their first bucket. De Queen's press was a problem for the Wolverettes throughout the game, as the Lady Leopards forced turnovers which turned into points. Still, the Wolverettes stayed close, trailing 9-7 at the end of one. Prescott fought to tie the score at 14-14 with 5:15 left in the half, and was then outscored 11-3 for the remainder of the period. Prescott's final bucket came on a three by Harris to put the Wolverettes up 17-15. From there, the Lady Leopards went on a 10-0 run to lead 25-17 at the half. The third quarter opened with De Queen stealing the ball and nailing a trey. The Lady Leopards thwarted Prescott's offense by double and triple teaming Harris, forcing other players to try and take up the offensive slack. The Wolverettes fought back, and cut the lead to two at the end of three with the score being 36-34. The Lady Leopards pulled away in the fourth quarter, working the clock late and earning a valuable conference win. Harris led all scorers with 27 points. Shana Smith paced De Queen with 14, while Tamara Bowers scored 10. Prescott hit 13 of 22 from the line, while the Lady Leopards were 14 of 21.
