Wolves take care of business, post wins over GurdonBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, January 8, 2003 in the Nevada County Picayune Prescott's basketball squads sent Gurdon packing Friday night. The Wolves posted a 57-36 win over the Devils, while the Wolverettes came from behind to dump the Lady Devils 44-37. The Wolverettes, 8-2 on the year, had problems finding the bottom of the net in the first three periods, but played a solid defense to stay close to the Lady Devils. After Gurdon won the tip and scored, the game was played primarily on defense as neither squad shot well. At the 5:50 mark it was 2-2. The Lady Devils found their range, somewhat, midway through the first quarter, but had trouble getting shots off because of Prescott's stingy defense. The first quarter ended with Gurdon holding a 10-6 lead. Gurdon opened the second by scoring, but saw the Wolverettes rally to cut the lead to 14-10 with 4:38 showing. Prescott then outscored the Lady Devils 6-2 for the remainder of the period. In fact, the Wolverettes scored at the buzzer to knot the score at 16-16 at the half. The Wolverettes showed more patience in the third quarter after a first half of up and down ball. Prescott managed to take the lead, but was unable to put any distance between them and Gurdon. Period three ended with the Lady Devils leading 29-27. The fourth quarter was all Prescott, as the Wolverettes scored the first seven points of the final eight minutes to take a 34-27 lead. With 5:52 left in the contest, the Wolverettes were in the bonus situation at the free throw line. But, instead of pressing the issue inside, the Wolverettes pulled the ball back and worked the clock. The Lady Devils didn't roll over and play dead, though. Instead, Gurdon fought back to cut the lead to 36-31 with 3:46 left. For the remainder of the contest, the two squads traded baskets. Tami Harris was the game's leading scorer with 25 points. Haly Griffin led Gurdon with 10. The Wolverettes were nine of 13 from the line, while Gurdon connected on 12 of 15 free throws. When the senior boys took over the court, the Wolves wasted little time in showing the Devils it was going to be a long night. Gurdon scored first on a free throw, only to see Joe Stueart get loose on the baseline and slam Prescott's first points home. The situation didn't improve for the Devils the rest of the game. Gurdon had control problems with the ball and turned it over repeatedly during the contest. The usual result was points for Prescott. The Wolves jumped on Gurdon early, reeling off 12 points before the Devils managed the team's first field goal. In fact, the Devils only scored twice from the field in the opening eight minutes. Prescott, though, had no such problem and led 16-5 at the end of one. The second quarter opened with Prescott scoring from the charity stripe and being put in the bonus with 7:13 remaining. Several of Gurdon's players were breathing hard from the pace of the game, which was blistering at times. The Devils were aggressive, but lost out to frustration as Gurdon had no answer for Prescott's athletic ability and speed. Meanwhile, the Wolves controlled all aspects of the game, and pushed the score to 23-9 with 4:46 left in the half. Gurdon's final points in the first half came on a three-pointer. However, the Wolves reeled off eight points to Gurdon's three and led 31-12 at the break. Prescott Coach Larry Newsom started substituting late in the second quarter, and kept putting new players in the game the rest of the night. This allowed Gurdon to play close in the third quarter, as the Devils managed to score 12 points, equaling the team's offensive output in the first half. The Wolves remained in control, setting the speed of the game, and led at the end of three 45-24. Gurdon was in the one-and-one early in the fourth period, while having only one foul called against them. Prescott's replacement players hustled up and down the court and kept the game interesting. When the buzzer sounded, Prescott had evened its season record to 3-3 with a 57-36 win. Stueart led all scorers with 27 points on the night. Gurdon's leading scorer was Dorsey Kelley with nine. Prescott was three of eight from the line, while Gurdon hit 11 of 18 free throws. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
