Devils fall to Prescott; boys lose 57-36, girls falter 44-37BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, January 8, 2003 in the Gurdon Times It was a rough night for the Devils as Gurdon went winless at Prescott Friday, Jan. 3. The Devils fell 57-36 to the Wolves, while the Lady Devils went down 44-37 to the Wolverettes. In the senior boys game, Gurdon managed to score first, but went cold while the Wolves reeled off 12 straight points. The Devils had turnover problems, which didn't help the team's cause against Gurdon's long-time rival. Period one ended with Prescott leading 16-5, as Gurdon could only manage two field goals in the first eight minutes of play. The situation didn't improve much in the second quarter as the Wolves controlled the pace of the game and were more accurate from the field. Gurdon had the shots, but couldn't buy a bucket at times. The shots were either just short or just long, but the results were the same no points. Halftime arrived with Prescott in control 31-12. Gurdon managed to equal its offensive output in the third quarter by scoring 12 points. The Devils cut the lead to 37-23 with 2:14 showing in the period, only to see the Wolves find the range to make it 45-24 at the buzzer. Both teams substituted heavily in the fourth quarter, giving the younger players game time and helping them earn valuable experience. The Devils were called for one foul in the second half, while being in the bonus at the 6:54 point of the fourth. The younger players hustled up and down the court, with the teams trading buckets. But, it proved to be too little, too late for Gurdon as the Devils fell 57-36. Dorsey Kelley led the Devils with nine points. Joe Stueart was the game's leading scorer with 27. Gurdon hit 11 of 18 from the line, while Prescott was three of eight. Gurdon's Lady Devils managed to lead most of the game, only to see the Wolverettes pull out the win in the fourth quarter. The Lady Devils won the opening tip and scored to get the game underway, with little scoring to follow. With 5:12 left in the first, the score was 4-4, with Gurdon outscoring Prescott 6-2 the rest of the period. The teams played at a solid pace, with both having scoring opportunities. However, neither could consistently find the bottom of the bucket. Period one ended with Gurdon leading 10-6. The Lady Devils opened the second period by scoring first, then had problems getting anything to fall the rest of the frame. In fact, period two was a reversal of the first quarter, with Prescott outscoring Gurdon 10-6 to knot the score at 16-16 at halftime. The squads swapped buckets throughout the third period, with the lead changing hands several times. However, when the buzzer sounded, Gurdon led 29-27. The Wolverettes scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to go up 34-29, and maintained the lead the rest of the game. The Lady Devils fought back, but fell short because of the inability to score consistently. Haly Griffin led Gurdon with 10 points. Tami Harris was the game high scorer with 25 for Prescott. The Lady Devils did well from the charity stripe hitting 12 of 15. Prescott was nine of 13 from the line. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
