Wolves post 33-17 quarterfinal win part 2BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, December 4, 2002 in the Nevada County Picayune The drive was capped with Martin hitting Lewis from the three for the touchdown with 1:18 left in the first quarter. The Wolves opted for a two-point conversion, and were successful, making it 21-0. Prescott was flagged for being offside on the kickoff, pushing the ball back five yards. The boot sailed to the 15 and was brought back to the 26, where Williams hit the runner low, flipping him. Ozark managed to get to its 35 as the quarter ended. Two plays into the second period, Andrew Hastings broke loose up the middle for a 61-yard touchdown. The point after made it 21-7. Following the score, Prescott would have its only possession of the quarter. Lewis took the kick at the three and made it to the 23 before being brought down. Prescott made it to the Ozark 27 and appeared to be on the way for another touchdown. Then the rains fell in the form of penalty flags. Penalties came in bunches for the Wolves when infractions were called. After getting to the 27, Prescott was flagged three times on fourth down, moving the ball back to the 47, where the Wolves were forced to punt. With 7:19 left in the half, Ozark took over on its eight, drove to the Prescott 25 in 15 plays, capping the march with a 42-yard field goal. Ozark was aided in its drive by a facemask call on third down. Halftime arrived with Prescott leading 21-10. Ozark began the second half with the ball on its 29. The Hillbillies were flagged twice, moving the team back to the 19. This was followed by the quarterback being sacked at the 13. The end result was Ozark punting to Prescott, as the Wolf 47. The Wolves were unable to move and punted back to Ozark at its 31. The Hillbillies fumbled the snap, with Butler recovering at the Ozark 31. Two plays later, Martin hit Butler in the end zone for a 32-yard touchdown. The point after was wide left, but Prescott led 27-10 with 7:03 in the third. The kick was returned to the 34, but five yards were tacked on due to an inadvertent facemask call. Three plays later, Ozark again punted with Lewis fielding the kick at the Prescott 35 and returning it to the 42. It was three and out for Prescott, with the punt fumbled and recovered by Ozark at its 16. Eli Ratcliff picked off a third-and-10 pass, taking it back to the Hillbilly 16. Martin went to the air for Steuart, who pulled the ball in for Prescott's final score of the night with 1:45 left in the third. The try for two was no good, but the Wolves were in control 33-10. Starting at the Ozark 20, the Hillbillies made it to Prescott's 48 before the period ended. Ozark ran three plays to start the final 12 minutes, but turned the ball over on downs at the Prescott 44. About this time, the officials made their presence known. After Martin had found Jarrod Norwood on a slant to the Ozark 40, he returned to the air looking for Steuart, who was called for offensive interference, though he had been the one hit by the defender. This move the Wolves back to the Prescott 45. From there Prescott went backwards to the 37, where they punted. The punt was fumbled and recovered by Prescott at the Ozark 46. Again, the Wolves were unable to move forward and punted after three snaps. With 7:24 left in the game, Ozark began at its 19, and saw a first down pass intercepted by Steuart, who returned the pick to the Hillbilly 36. Prescott was more interested in taking time off the clock than scoring. The Wolves took their time coming out of the huddle and getting plays off, which frustrated Ozark. The Wolves were unable to generate any offense, with Martin picked off on third down, with the interception returned to the Ozark 42. The Hillbillies mounted their final scoring attack of the game, pounding the middle of Prescott's defense. The touchdown came with Hastings taking the handoff up the gut for a 26-yard run. The PAT made it 33-17, with 3:57 left. Ozark attempted an onside kick, only to have Prescott fall on the ball at the Wolf 44. The Wolves kept the ball on the ground, showing they could play power football when necessary. Prescott moved to the Ozark 33 as time expired. Statistically, Prescott had 12 first downs to eight for Ozark. The Wolves running game netted but 19 yards, while Ozark had 256. In passing, Prescott had 257 yards, while Ozark was held to 9. In total yards, Prescott gained 276, to 265 by Ozark. Prescott was 20 of 32 in passing, while Ozark was three of eight, with both quarterbacks intercepted once. Prescott didn't fumble in the game, while Ozark put the ball on the ground four times, losing three. However, the Wolves were penalized 14 times for 80 yards, while Ozark was flagged four times for 30 yards. In other AAA playoff action, Rivercrest ended Star City's season, 28-14; Nashville blanked Newport, 21-0, and Warren hammered Gosnell, 43-28. Nashville will tangle with Rivercrest Friday night in semifinal play, while Prescott hits the road once again, heading to Warren.
