No changes planned for Gurdon by mayor, marshalBY AUTUMN PENNINGTONPublished Wednesday, November 13, 2002 in the Gurdon Times On Tuesday, November 5, the citizens of Gurdon gathered at their specified polling place to cast their vote for the candidates of their choice. However, only two city positions open for re-election. One was the mayor's position and the other was for city marshal. Gurdon Mayor Clayton Franklin had no opposition for his seat. At last months meeting of the Gurdon City Council, Franklin said he would like to continue with the clean up efforts of Gurdon. "In recent months we have torn down several condemned and vacant properties in order to better the looks of our town. This doesn't just appeal to the people of our town, but also the one's looking to live here." Franklin will hold his position as mayor for four more years. In the City Marshal's race, incumbent Don Childres won over his opponent Frank Plasek. When asked what his plans for Gurdon are in the next two years, Childres said he would continue to do what he has been doing all along. Childres has applied for several grants to purchase much needed equipment for the department. Childres said he plans on applying for several more. "We need these grants. It is hard to operate under a budget, but I have managed to do it in the past and I plan to do it in the future. This is why I apply for grants, to keep our department up to date, yet under budget." Childres said he plans to continue battling Gurdon's drug problem. In the past two year's the GPD has carried out several long term investigations to arrest several of Gurdon's drug dealers. In the next two years Childres said he plans to work with the children of Gurdon to better inform them of the danger of drugs and strangers. "I just want to make Gurdon a safe place for people to live. I want everyone in this town to know my door is always open and I can always be reached on the phone. If anyone has a problem I want them to come in and sit down with me. I know we can work it out," said Childres. Childres also said he appreciated everyone's vote and the support he received from the town during his campaign. "I hope to work with everyone in the town to make Gurdon a better place and make everyone feel safe. We have an excellent police department and I am proud to work with the officers I have."
