Wolves handle Fouke part II

Published Wednesday, November 6, 2002 in the Nevada County Picayune

The Wolves were to get the ball to start the third quarter, but got caught napping as Fouke went for an on-side kick and recovered the ball at the Prescott 34.

Two plays resulted in a one-yard loss before Stueart picked Larey off for the second time of the night.

Prescott began at its 24, overcame Martin being sacked for a four-yard loss en route to touchdown number six.

Vanhook put the Wolves in scoring position by breaking free and scrambling to the Fouke five after a 47-yard run.

He carried three more times before breaking the plane of the goal line to make it 38-6.

The PAT split the uprights to make it 39-6 with 5:49 to go in the third.

Fouke faced being caught in the new 35-point rule. Under this rule, once a team trails by 35 or more, the clock doesn't stop except for time outs and a player going out of bounds.

Jerry Littleton let the kickoff roll between his legs, then raced to the end zone to pick it up. He made it to the one before being brought down.

Cary Rogers, the Fouke coach, called a time out to argue with the officials on Littleton being allowed to bring the ball out at all. However, such calls can't be argued, and the Panthers were in a tight spot.

Nathan Williams carried three times to the eight, giving Fouke some breathing room for what appeared to be a punt.

But, on fourth down, a flag sailed to the turf, with Prescott being called for offsides. This moved the ball to the 13 and breathed new life into the Panthers.

The new life was short-loved, but did allow Fouke three more plays and better field position for the punt.

The kick rolled dead at the Panther 49 with 2:27 left in the frame.

Damaricus Craven gained six on first down, but a hold on the next play moved the Wolves back to the Prescott 47.

This was followed by Martin being sacked for the second time of the night, this time at the Prescott 42.

Joseph Bishop picked off a Martin pass intended for Lewis, and returned it to the Wolf 39. Five yards was added to this after Prescott was called for grabbing the facemask.

Period four began with the Panthers moving toward the team's second score of the night.

Fouke ran eight plays with Nate Williams scoring from the one with 8:41 left in the game. The two-point conversion was successful, bringing the score to 39-14.

The Panthers attempted another on-side kick, but saw Stueart cradle the ball and drop at the Prescott 41.

Vanhook carried twice for two yards before Martin hooked up with Lewis on a 60-yard touchdown strike. Lewis found a seam in the Fouke defense and outran the entire Panther team for the score.

The PAT made it 46-14 with 7:02 to go.

Starting at the Fouke 28, the Panthers moved to the Prescott 45 before Larey was picked off a third time by Stueart at the Wolf 35.

While the interception was made at the 35, Stueart's attempt to get away from the Fouke players and make a big play resulted in his running from sideline to sideline and being tackled at the 26.

Smith sent in an entire crew of substitutes as the outcome was secure with 4:21 showing.

Lewis, now under center, winged a pass to Chris Hunt for a gain of five, after Prescott had been called for illegal motion.

A pass from Lewis to Charles Gulley lost three to the 25, before Lewis flipped a pass to Hopper, who found a hole and sprinted 75 yards for the final touchdown of the night.

The point after made it 53-14.

Unofficial statistics show both teams threw almost the same number of passes. Prescott was seven of 12 for 198 yards, while Fouke was four of 13 for 54 yards.

Prescott ran the ball 24 times for 169 yards, with the Panthers rushing 45 times for 114 yards.

Overall, Fouke controlled the ball longer offensively than Prescott, as the Panthers tallied 58 plays to 36 by the Wolves.

Both squads had 14 first downs, and fumbled twice, each losing the ball once.

Prescott had its quarterback sacked twice, while Fouke's got hit, but was not sacked.

Prescott led in penalties, being flagged eight times for 50 yards in losses. Fouke was penalized three times for 20 yards.

The Wolves punted once for 27 yards and no return. Fouke punted three times for a total of 89 yards.

Prescott's signalcallers fired three touchdown passes, and suffered one interception.

Larey was picked off three times, as his favorite receiver appeared to be Prescott's Stueart.

The Wolves will have to play near perfect football in the season's finale at Cummins Field Friday night when they host the Ashdown Panthers.

A win puts Prescott in a three-way tie for first place, and a convoluted method to be used to figure out which team plays where in the playoffs.

As it stands, Ashdown is undefeated in league play, while Prescott and Nashville have one loss each. The Wolves fell to the Scrappers, who were, in turn, beaten by Ashdown.

Regardless of the outcome Friday night, the Wolves will be making a return to post-season play.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
