Charles Waters

Published Wednesday, November 6, 2002 in the Nevada County Picayune

Charles Herman Waters of Dallas, Texas, was born on March 18, 1917, in Rosston to Sid and Irene Purtle Waters. Herman graduated from Rosston High School where he played basketball and met and cultivated life long friends.

At the age of 14 Herman became a Christian and joined Rosston Baptist Church. The foundation and direction of his life was determined by this significant commitment.

Upon graduation from high school Herman continued to work with his father on their farm on Highway 4 (the road from Rosston to Hope). One of his classmates was Floy Catherine Caldwell and he continued to date her during these years, fell in love, and Floy and Herman were married on December 14, 1939.

Little did the newly married couple know that WWII was just around the corner. In October, 1942, Herman joined the United States Air Force and served for 39 months.

Many of our Arkansas boys did not come home; but Herman survived WWII and returned to his bride to develop their lives together. Wanting a better opportunity in life, Floy and Herman moved to Dallas after the war where Herman went to work at Longhorn Roofing Co., which later became the Ruberoid Company, and today is GAF Corporation. He retired from GAF after 39 years of loyal service.

During these years Herman was active as a 32nd Degree Mason of the Loyal Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of Landmark Lodge, and a member of the Scottish Rite Order.

In retirement Herman continued to cultivate those extracurricular interests which he had always enjoyed, such as fishing, going to baseball games, working in his yard (two yards as a matter of fact, his Rosston home and his Dallas home), and camping out with friends. Herman added two interests in retirement, however, which were new and that was travel. With Floy at his side Herman traveled throughout the world, to China, to Canada on several occasions, to Israel, to Alaska, and to eight countries in Europe, including France, England, Germany, and others. He became a charter member of the Silver Serenaders of Texas Senior Adult Choir and was loyal for 21 years until his illness prevented him from participating. With the choir he traveled to Hawaii, Israel, and 17 states which included singing in Carnegie Hall in New York City in 1993.

Herman Waters was a member of Cliff Temple Baptist Church, Dallas, and is survived by his wife Floy Catherine, two nephews, Charles Caldwell and Jim Palmer and their wives, JoAn and Betty respectively and their children, Darrell, Judy, and Kenneth and families and Ronny, Lauren, and Suzanne and their families.

No doubt Herman is now with our Lord Jesus and our loving God. He died November 2, 2002.

Funeral services were 11 a.m., Tuesday, November 5, 2002, at First Baptist Church in Rosston, with Rev. Mark Faulkner and Rev. Jim Palmer officiating.

Burial followed at Holly Springs Cemetery in Rosston. Arrangements by Brazzell/Cornish Funeral Home in Prescott.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church in Rosston.
