Remainder of 2002 will be busy for Prescott's ChamberBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, October 23, 2002 in the Nevada County Picayune Prepare to be extremely busy the rest of the year. Starting with the Halloween Costume Contest on Oct. 31, the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce has a full slate of activities to keep everyone hopping. The costume contest is open to all businesses, industries and school employees, with judging to be done Oct. 31. According to the Chamber's executive director, Mary Godwin, the judges will be from out-of-town, and will go from place to place examining the costumes. Entries will be accepted through October 30, and can be made by calling the Chamber at 887-2102. There will be cash prizes to the top five finishers. First place will received $25, with $20 going to the second place contestant/team. Third place will net $15, while the fourth place finisher gets $10 and fifth place gets $5. Last year, Godwin said, the judges had to examine almost 170 entries. November kicks off with the Chamber's fall fashion show and lunch at the Potlatch building at the Nevada County Fairgrounds Saturday, Nov. 16, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.. This year's theme will be "The Turning Colors of Fall." Penny Richards will be catering the luncheon, with the menu to feature chicken Tetrazzini, green beans, a tossed salad, rolls and a fudge-topped brownie for dessert. Tickets for the fashion show are $8 and can be obtained at the Chamber office. There will be a guest speaker talking about current trends in hairstyles, makeup and colors for the fall. In addition, local merchants will have Christmas gift ideas on display at the fashion show. From this point on, everything will be geared toward the Christmas holidays. On December 5, representatives will go to Little Rock to decorate the Nevada County Christmas tree on the Capitol grounds. December 6 is the deadline for businesses to enter the best decorated window contest, and homeowners to enter the Parade of Homes decorating competition. Judging for these contests will be done Dec. 7, and announced at Christmas on the Square Dec. 10. Christmas on the Square festivities will begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, with the annual Christmas parade, and conclude with activities on the Nevada County Courthouse lawn. The highlight of Christmas on the Square will again be the "snowball avalanche", where ping pong balls containing discounts to area businesses are shot over the crowd. Winners of the various Christmas contests will be announced at this time as well. On Dec. 12, the Prescott-Nevada County Senior Center will have its annual open house and community coffee from 9:30-11 a.m. This will be followed on Dec. 13 by the live nativity at the fairgrounds. This year's nativity will be from 5-9 p.m. In case of rain, it will be held on Dec. 16. The month's activities come to an end with Breakfast with Santa on Dec. 21 at the Potlatch building.
