Wolves gain measure of revenge part 2BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, September 25, 2002 in the Nevada County Picayune The end result was Hope was given the ball on downs at the Wolf 42. Six plays later, the Cats led 13-12, as Conway scored on a one-yard plunge with 2:56 left. Following another penalty against Prescott, Hope opted for a two-point conversion. The try was good and the Cats were up 15-12. Again, this didn't set well with the Wolves, who began the next drive at the Prescott 36. First down saw Vanhook gain two yards, with Martin being sacked for a loss of six on the second snap. On third down, Martin went to the air, finding Vanhook, who battled through the Hope defense to score. With 1:28 left in the first half, Prescott again led, this time 18-15. The PAT split the uprights putting the Wolves up 19-15. The half ended with Martin taking a knee after Hope turned the ball over on downs at the Prescott 24. Period three opened with the Cats receiving the kickoff. Ordinarily this is no big deal, but the Wolves attempted to squib kick the ball. However, Lewis's foot hit the ball too low causing it to get airborne instead of roll along the wet turf. It floated into the hands of Jamie Turner at the Hope 33. He managed to get to the Wolf 38 before being tackled. The Cats fumbled on their first play, with Woodley picking the loose ball up and rambling to the Hope 18. Three plays later Vanhook was in the end zone again and Prescott's lead was increased to 25-15. The point after made it 26-15, with 10:32 on the clock. Hope wouldn't score in the third period, while the Wolves would add their final touchdown during the frame. After the teams swapped punts, the Cats were at their nine with 4:22 showing. The Cats moved downfield on the strength of solid runs by Conway and Floyd before McCorkle was picked off by Stueart at the Hope 47. Smith called a draw on first down, with Vanhook responding, gaining 24 yards before losing the ball out of bounds on the Hope 23. The 18th penalty of the game was called against the Wolves, holding, moving Prescott back to the 33. In spite of the penalty, Martin winged a pass to Vanhook for the Wolves's final touchdown. The PAT was no good, but Prescott led 32-15 with 2:52 left in the third. Hope ran four plays and turned the ball over to the Wolves on down. The quarter ended with Prescott at Hope's 45, facing a fourth and long situation. After an illegal motion call against Prescott started the final 12 minutes, the ball was punted, going out of bounds on the Hope 15. Then lightning struck for the Cats, as Conway broke several tackles and raced 85-yards for the touchdown. The point after made it 32-22 with 11:28 left in the game. Reggie Sims fumbled the kickoff, with Hope recovering at the Prescott 33. Four plays later, it was Prescott's ball on downs as the Wolfpack defense refused to yield the required 10 yards. However, the Wolves gave the Cats an early Christmas present by fumbling on the second play. Hope recovered at the Prescott 32 with 9:45 left in the contest. Floyd gained 18 yards on two carries, with the three-play drive ending with McCorkle connecting with Turner on a 14-yard touchdown pass with 8:47 to go. The PAT was good and Hope had cut the 15-point deficit to three with the score 32-29. Neither team was able to score again, though the Cats did manage to put a scare in to Wolf fans. Prescott managed to drive to the Hope 24 before turning the ball over on downs. The Cats moved to the Wolf 17, and appeared to be headed toward the go-ahead touchdown. Then, McCorkle was re-introduced to the Wolfpack "D". Jason Butler began the assault by sacking Hope's quarterback at the 22. This was followed by a holding call against the Cats, and McCorkle again being sacked, this time by Lewis, who nailed him at the Hope 42. The Cats tried a little razzle-dazzle of their own, with McCorkle lining up to punt, but passing to Conway at the 20 instead. The gain wasn't enough for a first down, giving the Wolves the ball with 2:22 to go. Vanhook gained seven on first down. This was followed by each team calling time out. Smith told his charges the game hinged on them getting a first down. This would force Hope to call its final time out, but with the Wolves able to run the clock by kneeling on the ball. Smith's call was on the money, as Vanhook fought to the Prescott 35 for the first down. He carried once more, for a yard, before Martin took consecutive knees to run out the clock. When the buzzer sounded, some players rolled on the muddy field in celebration, while others flung water in the air. Fans cleared the Prescott bleachers to join in the festivities. The Wolves will be on the road Friday night as they travel to Bismarck for a date with the Lions. This will open 7AAA conference play for Prescott. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
